Exploring Windows cloud solutions: Insights and sample scenarios
Event details
Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 are complementary solutions that enable you to deliver Windows from the cloud to workers anywhere, on any device. Join Scott Manchester and Carolyn Carnes as they pinpoint the key differences between the solutions and compare the IT admin and employee experiences. By the end of this session, you'll feel confident in answering what, where, when, why, and how when it comes to Windows in the cloud!
This session is part of the Microsoft Technical Takeoff: Windows + Intune. Add it to your calendar, RSVP for event reminders, and post your questions and comments below! This session will also be recorded and available on demand shortly after conclusion of the live event. |

Exploring Windows cloud solutions: Insights and sample scenarios starts soon. Have a question? Post it here in the Comments.
- MrIT_GregCopper ContributorIs there a free lab where we can practice using Azure like what was shown in the demo? Great presentations too.
- TomHicklingMicrosoftHow many people use Azure Virtual Desktop, and or Windows 365 at this point - or are thinking of doing so?
- Charlie DobsonIron ContributorMy company is slowly getting into AVD and plan to expand it's use greatly in the next couple years.
- SigurdWernerIron ContributorWe are currently evaluating use cases for us. OnCall employee access, 3rd party/contractor access, Frontline workers,... and if it would fit better in AVD or W365
- RobdeRoosIron ContributorWe use AVD for some customers. W365 is deemed to expensive by our customers. Most customers comment they can buy a mega laptop/pc for the yearly fee of Windows 365.
- TomHicklingMicrosoftThanks Rob - so yes but you are then stuck with that piece of hardware, if you lose it, you've lost it. If it breaks you need to fix it or buy a new one. It will also age and you will need a new one. With W365 Microsoft provides Windows as a service from the cloud. We manage the underlying infrastructure and will over time update that hardware so that you can take advantage of that as a quicker CloudPC. Also it is a resilient service, if there was ever an issue with the specfic VM Azure will recover it so that it is available for you, and you cant lose it. And becuase you cant lose it there is no risk or someone getting access to the data kept on it.
- MrIT_GregCopper ContributorIs there a free lab where we can practice using Azure like what was shown in the demo? Great presentations too.
- Charlie DobsonIron ContributorI would really like to have a free lab option as well. Hands-on learning is the best way for me ("kinetic learning"). This would go a long way to helping me support AVD and increasing adoption for my company. Like the old TechNet days.
- Joe_LurieMicrosoft
Charlie Dobson and MrIT_Greg We also have the Windows 11 and Office 365 Deployment Lab Kit available to you to use. You can download that from our eval center here: Windows 11 and Office 365 Deployment Lab Kit | Microsoft Evaluation Center.
This kit comes with eval software that is timebombed to 90-days, and you still need the Azure subscription, which as TomHickling said can be a free version. Hopefully with the lab kit and the free Azure subscription you can get the hands-on you are asking for.
- TomHicklingMicrosoftYou can get $200 free credit for 30 days which enables you to run Azure services such as AVD in that time and up to that value. There are also a range of other Azure services that are free for longer time periods: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/free/lab-services#all-free-services

Welcome to Exploring Windows cloud solutions: Insights and sample scenarios and the second annual Microsoft Technical Takeoff for Windows + Intune! Have a question? Post here in the Comments so we can help. Let’s make this an active Q&A!
- Charlie DobsonIron ContributorWhat permissions are required to fully setup an Azure VM? My company has taken away my Cloud Administrator role and I'm unable to add users to an app pool.
- TomHicklingMicrosoft
Here is the AVD pre-reqs doc: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/prerequisites?tabs=portal There is full RBAC support for AVD and there are a number of built-in roles that enable granular control, like the ability only manage session hosts or applications etc. Here is the RBAC doc: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/rbac

For AVD pooled instances, are the server instances ephemeral or persistent? In VMWare Horizon and Citrix, we are used to servers being wiped on a daily/weekly basis.
- TomHicklingMicrosoftCurrently they are persistent, but Scott will talk about a new upcoming feature that slightly addresses this problem, and there will be new future announcements coming
- TomHicklingMicrosoftSo we ran out of time to show it, but catch up on the recordings and look for an upcoming feature called Session host update which updates all session hosts to a new image allowing monthly rollouts etc.
