AMA: Windows Autopilot
Event details
Deploying Windows is getting even easier with the next generation of Windows Autopilot. In this Ask Microsoft Anything (AMA) session, we’ll answer your questions and offer tips to help you take advantage of faster, more configurable self-deployment capabilities, streamlined device preparation, and enhanced reporting!
This session is part of Tech Community Live: Windows edition. |
- JohnSpeerCopper ContributorDuring Autopilot can you force Feature Updates
- arpitsinhaMicrosoft
No, we don't support feature updates currently.
- Jason_SandysMicrosoftNo, not today. This is an of interest feature that has been investigated extensively but there's nothing to share about our future intent or timeline other than aspirationally, we would like to be able to offer this at some point during Autopilot.

Thanks for participating in today's session of AMA: Windows Autopilot! For reference, the panel covered your question at 42:55.
- ajp999Brass ContributorThe new Windows Autopilot device preparation capabilities needs the option to allow administrators to customize the OOBE experience. We do not want users to see the screens that allow them to configure location services, telemetry etc.
- BoxCopper Contributoryes, those are enterprise requirements. There should be a dropdown for locale with choice like "automatic" and alternative to set to a fix value. And of course same for keyboard layout !! This is known issue since years. If you want Enterprise acceptance, finally fix that. If we have swiss german keyboard and of course german language, we may get a german keyboard layout and cannot log in due characters wrong typed.
- HigherEdArchitectCopper ContributorWill autopatch become available for A3/A5 licensed tenants?
- Jason_SandysMicrosoftThis is a Q&A for Autopilot, not Autopatch. The AMA for Windows Updates just concluded but you try posting this question there: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/windows-it-pro_have-questions-on-how-to-control-update-offerings-activity-7203533013190647808-m3DQ
- lalanc01Iron ContributorHi, is it normal that I still don't see Autopilot Device preparation policy blade under enrolment?
- jptech9Brass ContributorI don't see Device Preparation either.
- Deepika-WadhwaMicrosoftAs Hung mentioned - it is in the process of being rolled out and will be available worldwide this week.
- JuanitaBaptisteMicrosoftHello Stephane, it should be rolled out to all tenants now. It should be available the Autopilot Device Prep Policy should be just above the Windows Autopilot profile. Please reply back if you are still having issues viewing it.
- lalanc01Iron ContributorThks for replying. I confirm that we don't see it Here's what we see Devices Manage Windows Autopilot devices. Deployment profiles Customize the Windows Autopilot provisioning experience. Enrollment Status Page Show app and profile installation statuses to users during device setup. Intune Connector for Active Directory Configure hybrid Azure AD joined devices.
- Bryan17Occasional Readeri had to sign out and resign into the intune portal for it to appear

Welcome to the AMA: Windows Autopilot. Let's get started! Post your questions in the Comments. We'll be answering questions in the live stream and in chat.
- jptech9Brass ContributorWill there be any enhancements for Autopilot Hybrid Join devices?
- Jason_SandysMicrosoftI'm sure the on camera folks will address this, but no, we have zero intent at this time to improve or update the functionality related to Autopilot and hybrid join. Is there a reason you are interested in this and specifically why you cannot embrace cloud native (which is our *strong* recommendation for new device provisioning)?
- JuanitaBaptisteMicrosoftHi Josh, we currently do not have any plans on our roadmap to for additional functionality in hybrid. We will continue to update critical, and security related fixes and requirements as needed.
- yschlechtCopper ContributorHello, my questions are below - many thanks for your support :) - Why was Autopilot Device Preparation developed? What advantages should it offer? Who is the target group to use it? Is it primarily for government customers? - Based on which factors do I decide whether I should use APv1 or APv2? - Is it intended that OEMs can upload the corporate device identifier to tenants? - Is there a way to upload the corporate device identifier via PowerShell script? or is a script for it in planning? - Troubleshooting: Registry? Event Viewer? Scripts? o e.g. Application and Services Logs –> Microsoft –> Windows –> Provisioning-Diagnostics-Provider –> AutoPilot - Is it correct that all Autopilot-enrolled devices have Ownership Corporate? If so, is the idea of the Corporate Device identifiers mechanism meant to upload only corporate devices identifiers and thus consider all others as personal devices?

Thanks for participating in today's session of AMA: Windows Autopilot! For reference, the panel covered your question at 9:40.
- Andreas_Wi401Copper ContributorWill there be improvements during Autopilot for application installation in the way that installations of apps will be done more in parallel than one after the other to speed up the enrollment time of a device?
- Jon_AndesMicrosoftDuring Autopilot device preparation there's an orchestration for provisioning apps between the various sources, so LoB apps first get provisioned then Win32 apps get provisioned to prevent collisions during app installs.
- FrankRojasMicrosoftAndreas the process that Jon mentions is documented here: https://learn.microsoft.com/autopilot/device-preparation/tutorial/user-driven/entra-join-workflow#windows-autopilot-device-preparation-user-driven-microsoft-entra-join-process

There are several Autopilot deployment methods such as: User Drive mode, self deploying, windows autopilot reset, pre-provisioning and support for existing devices. What is everyone's favourite at Microsoft? What would you recommend and why? What have you guys seen a lot of businesses use?

Thanks for participating in today's session of AMA: Windows Autopilot! For reference, the panel covered your question at 15:35.
- techsaitechOccasional ReaderCan you share insights about how copilot can be customized and securely used for educational institutions, hospitals and financial institutions? Can you share any reading materials to build custom autopilots and deploy in azure.
- Jason_SandysMicrosoft
While this is a great question, this really isn't in the scope of this AMA and thus outside the specific expertise that the SMEs and experts here and on camera are prepared to answer. I don't think we have an AMA for this specifically during this event so I don't have anything specific to point you to unfortunately to have your question better addressed.
Just to clarify here, Autopilot is not the same as Copilot. Autopilot is Microsoft's cloud Windows provisioning solution. Copilot is Microsoft's gen AI solution.
