In our tenant we have had Yammer disabled for the majority of our users. In MC482179, we were advised: "If you have disabled Yammer or wish to disable Yammer services for your users, please ensure that you remove both Yammer enterprise service plan as well as Viva Engage Core service plan for your users. This will disable access to Yammer as well as Viva Engage. "
We are already seeing Viva Engage Core license being auto-applied to all of our 365 E3 and E5 users. How much time do we have to organize the removal of those licenses to make sure Yammer doesn't start re-activating for users in our tenant?- Aaron, I believe that those user are ALREADY now able to access Yammer if the Viva Engage license has been applied and is active for them. If you don't want them to use Yammer or Viva Engage, you need to disable that license.
- AaronCouchIron Contributor
Yikes. Well, we'll need to investigate that asap then. More heads up or better thoughtfulness from Microsoft would have been nice for this customer choice.
All prior versions of MC482179, up until last week's updates, said "At this time there is no impact to your organization and no action is required from your end. Please note that these new service plans are in placeholding capacity as of now; they will be used to provision the new features and experiences in Viva Engage and Answers in Microsoft Viva in 2023."

Hi Aaron, for more info on what license settings to use see Incident Summary: Accidental Yammer access with new Viva Engage Core service plan deployment (sharepoint.com)
- AaronCouchIron Contributor
Sandra_Vargas - can you please provide a public link to this document? Thank you.
- kristinkoppBrass ContributorWe have links to Yammer posts and communities everwhere. When the URL changes will those links still work or will everything be broken? If there is a redirect how long will it work for?
- MuraliSitaram
Microsoft
We will make sure that embedded URLs remain backward compatible. No action is required on your end. We will ensure that the redirect works period.
- michaelmaillot_opBrass ContributorHello, I have a question from a colleague for a customer need. Are there any prerequisites for enabling Yammer (not talking about deploying but enabling)? Another question was if there's a possibility to restrict communities creation to a specific people (through AAD groups for example)? Thank you in advance for your answers.
- espnguyen
Microsoft
No there aren't any pre-requisites to enable the licenses. For restricting community creation, we honor whatever the M365 Group self-service setting is for the tenant. So if you restrict M365 Group creation then that will restrict who can create communities.
- Christian RahmeCopper Contributordoes the new branding affect the old yammer url's? do we need to do something on our end?
- MuraliSitaram
Microsoft
Eventually the URLs will be affected, but we will ensure backward compatibility so that nothing breaks, even with the older URLs. There will be no action required on your end in the use of the product.
- kristinkoppBrass ContributorAre you able to share the specific date we will start seeing the mobile banner about rebranding and what information will be share with that? What will the specific experience be for existing yammer mobile users? Does it matter if you have auto app updates turned on or off? When will the mobile app transition?
- evelynchan
Microsoft
The banner will start rolling out during the last week of February, so a majority of users should see it by the end of that week. If you have auto app updates on, you'll see it during that last week; if you have them turned off, you'll see it once you update your app after next week. There will not be a notification taking them to the banner, it will appear at the top of the Home Feed starting that last week and when tapped will take the user to our blog post about the rebrand or if user clicks 'X' it will disappear for good. We are working on getting more visuals and details out about the changes user will see through the rebrand, that will be shared later this week. Users will still see the same features and functionality, just under a new app name. This update will happen automatically in mid to late-March. We will preserve the ability to search for "Yammer" in both the app store and on your device to get to the Viva Engage app. To make for a more smooth transition, we will also carry forward a reference in push notifications and in the app stores to Yammer until the rebrand is complete. Message Center post MC514981 will give more details around the Yammer mobile app and Communities app in Outlook experiences rebranding.- kristinkoppBrass Contributor
The challenge for customers without the Viva Suite licensing is the blog post speaks to all kinds of features and functionality that they will not get so will cause a lot of confusion and swirl. Is there a way to link to something more generically relevant to all customers that is more focused on just the rebranding? Where can I find the message center post you refer to? Not sure where that is.
- TrassouBrass ContributorHi, can you tell us more about the Yammer algorithm? We find it difficult to understand why some posts are more popular than others (beyond the announcement).

Hi we have a blog post where we go into the details of how the Home Feed works: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/yammer-blog/yammer-explained-how-the-feed-works/ba-p/2757489
- PaayalarunashokCopper ContributorWe would also need to understand if there is a duplication of features within Viva engage and other 0365 services like Teams etc, so that we dont end up providing multiple platforms for end users, which might lead to a lot of confusion for the same purpose.
- danholme
Microsoft
Viva Engage is the new name and experience for Yammer. All the features you know from Yammer remain available for all M365 customers. See https://danholme.substack.com/p/yammer-is-engaged-get-to-know-viva for details.
Last week, we just introduced new features available for Microsoft Viva customers: https://danholme.substack.com/p/viva-engage-features-for-leaders
You can use a screwdriver to pound in a nail--there is overlap between any two tools. The best guidance is to center on these:
- Teams is a HUB for everything a user needs to be productive and have a great employee experience. Just as people learn when to use chat, versus channels, versus meetings--and there are no "exact rules", just what works for specific users and scenarios--people will learn when to use communities and storylines.
- Unlike Teams, where most "objects" (teams, chats, meetings) are created by *any* user, Viva Engage supports org wide scenarios and therefore has "objects" (communities, leaders, AMAs, campaigns) that are intentionally created by a smaller group of people, who can be taught that these scenarios are best initiated in Viva Engage.
- For every "normal" user, they shouldn't be thinking "I go to Viva Engage to do x", they should think "I go to Viva Engage because [scenario] is there". For example, "Viva Engage is where our IT adoption community is", "Viva Engage is where my leaders share news & announcements", "Viva Engage is where I can ask questions and get answers from experts I might not even know".
- KylaBrinkleyCopper ContributorWhile the announcement feature is automatically available for all community admins, is there a possibility that we would ever be able to disable this feature?
- MichaelHolste
Microsoft
Hey Kyla, At this time there are no plans to disable announcements in communities.
- Hughes818Iron ContributorWill this transition also fix the problem with not being able to attach images/screenshots inline with a message as it is posted? (They all post at the end of a message) Unfortunately, we have users opting for a private Facebook group because of this very problem right now :(.
- Does Facebook allow for inline images? I don't see that in the consumer FB product.

Stay tuned for more about this over the next few months.

Hi all, could you share when exactly you're planning to rebrand the interface of the (Yammer) web interface?
- Allison MichelsIron Contributor
More details and timeline can be found in this blog https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/yammer-blog/yammer-is-evolving-to-viva-engage/ba-p/3738825
"So, what can you expect to happen next?"
- The rebrand to Viva Engage will happen in phases throughout 2023, with the Outlook and mobile apps to change first, followed by the web experience. Here’s a brief timeline:
- February: You can expect an in-app rebrand banner to appear in the Yammer mobile app giving you advance notice of the change.
- March: The Yammer mobile app becomes Viva Engage. It’ll still be discoverable as Yammer for a while (e.g., in Apple’s Spotlight Search). Around the same time, the Communities app in Outlook will also be rebranded to Viva Engage.
- April: You can expect an in-app rebrand banner to appear in the Yammer.com web experience giving you advance notice of the change.
- Summer 2023: The Yammer.com web experience becomes Viva Engage, with a few UX/UI enhancements. The Yammer.com URL will remain for a while as the team makes additional backend updates.
- Later in 2023: Yammer.com URLs will be updated. We plan to support redirection for legacy URLs so that existing links and integrations continue to function.
