Event details

We are very excited to announce a Microsoft Teams ‘Ask Microsoft Anything’ (AMA) specific to the new Premium version of Microsoft Teams.

The AMA will take place on Thursday, April 27, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT in the comment section below.

An AMA is a live online event similar to an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with members of the product engineering team who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

Hello There! When will we be able to link M365 Groups to the Virtual Appointments App? Also what is the roadmap for having virtual appointments be an app that is available on iOS and android device clients?

These are both great suggestions but currently not on our roadmap. Our team would love to get more information from you. Can you please submit these to aka.ms/TeamsFeedback?

If we are looking to start testing out Teams Premium in our environment with a small subset of users, how does that work for meetings where, say, half of the attendees are licensed for Teams Premium and half are not? Will the summaries only be available to the licensed users? Are they not available at all unless all users are licensed?

Correct that the unlicensed attendees will not be able to see the intelligent recap, they will only see the standard meeting recap that's available thru the core service of Teams. Assuming the meeting has transcription enabled, the Teams Premium licensed users will see the "Recap" tab after the meeting and be able to view the "intelligent" component of it. One note is that if action items are captured and assigned, unlicensed users will still get assigned action items (too bad this isn't a workaround for avoiding action items!) Other features - such as watermarking, meeting branding, live translation for captions, end-to-end encryption for meetings - only look at the meeting organizer for Teams Premium. If the organizer has a license, all attendees in the meeting will get "extended access" to the feature. We decided to take this approach to help ensure meeting integrity i.e. watermarking is designed to deter leaks, it doesn't make sense unlicensed users would bypass the watermark. Intelligent recap requires each user to be licensed because it's generating a customized service specific to the end user (personalized markers)

If one of the meeting attendees is provided a Teams Premium license after the meeting, will they get access to historic intelligent recaps?

With the upcoming release of Copilot, what will licensing look like in relation to Teams Premium? Is Teams Premium a subcomponent of a larger Copilot product or do you view them as distinct products?

Hey Dan - we do believe that Copilot and Teams Premium are "distinct" products based on Copilot working across the M365 portfolio whereas Teams Premium is specific to Teams. Some customers may opt for one over the other based on the needs of their organization, but they can absolutely work together. There is certainly shared commonalities about boosting productivity and helping employees focus on the important aspects of their work, but the distinction in my opinion is Copilot going across M365. We have not determined licensing models yet and are actively working with customers collecting feedback. In full transparency I am not a licensing expert or licensing SME, sharing my personal opinion on how the services are distinct. I wish I could answer more on the licensing but we don't have that information yet, sorry!

For organizations that are more sensitive to legal discovery, what options are available to control retention of automatically generated meeting summaries? For example, does transcription have to be enabled for all meetings? Are summaries created automatically or are you prompted at the beginning of each meeting whether you would like one? Where do the summaries get stored?

For intelligent recap to work, you are correct transcription needs to be enabled as that's the primary source for generating the recap. However, transcription can be disabled when required/necessary in order to prevent a transcript from being generated/intelligent recap from working. If the meeting transcription is turned off, then there will be no AI signals - only recording, shared files, and manual notes will be available. If transcription is enabled and they have a Teams Premium license, the intelligent recap will get generated and surface within the Teams client. Meeting recordings are stored in SharePoint/OneDrive and to your earlier great Q gets respected by geo region/storage settings configured

One clarifying question, when you say they are stored in SharePoint/OneDrive, under what circumstances are they stored in SharePoint (and not the OneDrive of the person who clicked record)?

Can you talk about security and compliance as it relates to features of Teams Premium that utilize large language models? Specifically, does the information that gets fed into these models (i.e., transcripts from meetings that are summarized) also serve to train these models, or is our organizational data specifically protected from that?

Hi Dan - thanks for your question. You are correct that your organizational (customer) data remains your customer data and it's not exposed to training, customer data is not being used for modeling. Your Teams data is stored in the geographic region associated with your org/tenant and Microsoft does not have access to your meeting data. There is no change to Microsoft’s principles for commitments to data security and privacy in the enterprise. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/ai/responsible-ai-resources What I'd also add is that in time, ideally we would be able to have training done specific to your org/tenant (with proper data protections) in order to make AI more relevant to your org. This is not a commitment, but sharing that we do believe customers will want to see the modeling trained to make the service better specific to them/inside their environment. But again I want to be clear that customer data is not being used, I hope this was helpful

MS Teams Premium is nice indeed but it has some problems. We are facing a problem with custom meeting backgrounds on the web client. All custom backgrounds appear black when we select them. We are trying to solve this with your engineers from 20th of March, but still no luck there. Is this problem known to you? We are wondering if this a general problem that more customers are experience. What is your course of action here. Please elaborate.
