Designing Your Mesh Event: How to Create a Great Immersive Experience
Event details
We are very excited to announce an ‘Ask Microsoft Anything’ (AMA) specific on how to create a great immersive experience
The AMA will take place on Tuesday, June 4th, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT in the comment section below.
An AMA is a live online event similar to an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with members of the product engineering team who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

- CA_CallahanCopper ContributorSo Mesh Collections creates a site collection in SharePoint. I put assets for the collection in the site assets. That's all good (full discloser- former SharePoint MVP). But if you have any IRM policies, it seems to effect the collection, but I'm not seeing documentation of how Purview effects Mesh and the user experience. And even *why* policies are applied. Is there any more documentation out there about how Purview impacts Mesh?
- Matt_Crisler
Microsoft
Great question. I don't believe there is documentation on Purview's impacts on Mesh specifically. However, Mesh does not do anything "special" with respect to its files that are stored in the SharePoint associated with the collection, so any policies that are applied associated with Purview should generally be respected. While storing your event assets in your Mesh collection is very reasonable, I don't think there is specific value in using the Site Assets folder. That folder is optimized for content used on SharePoint Pages. While it should work for Mesh content, it will not automatically ensure permissions are matched to people who join the event like it does for SharePoint Pages. I would recommend you either use the existing Documents Library or create a Mesh Event Content library for that purpose mostly to avoid confusing and mixing content that is associated with Site Pages in SharePoint and content that is used for Mesh. Importantly, when you customize an event by adding Images and Videos using Mesh Objects, it is up to you to ensure the right attendees have access to the content when they join the event. If they do not have access to any content elements they will see an error message instead of the image or video itself, but will still be able to see other content they do have access to as well as be present with other attendees in the event. Here is where any policies associated with Purview should be respected, so if you are not allowed to share a file with a specific user due to Purview they will get that error message on the Object in the event.

Another question for you wonderful people: What, if any, Microsoft Mesh docs on learn.msft or support.msft have you all found useful? Or confusing? Or?
- CA_CallahanCopper ContributorA question concerning editing in the Mesh space. you can rotate diagonally? Right now I know I can grab the handles for top/bottom, left side/right side, but I'd love to be able to grab the edges and nudge them so I can have, say, images on the wall cheekily tilted. Is that is possible?
- Matt_Crisler
Microsoft
This is actually possible though admittedly not super intuitive and easy to find right now. If you look at your Image or other Objects from the left or right edge, you will notice there is a rotation handle in the middle of the bounding box from that angle. Grab that handle and rotate just like the ones on the front face edges and you can get your cheekily tilted image!- CA_CallahanCopper ContributorI'll give that a try this afternoon. Thanks! Wish there was a way to keep in touch after this.

Question for all of you - what are some kinds of events that you've run in Mesh, or seen people run in Mesh? Or what kind of events do you think will be most successful in Mesh, and what events are best left in a regular Teams/gallery meeting?- CA_CallahanCopper ContributorLearning events. Technical courses are supposed to have 12 or less people, so this is perfect. Single room. I do *many* sessions of teaching immersion in the immersive space/Mesh. This 16 person limit per instance is really rough. And the "internal users" only, of course. Like everyone else, I need more.
- GalenCopper ContributorThe meetings I've had the most success with Mesh or Immersive spaces are: 1. Team Building - There are no requirements to document anything - these are more team unification meetings to build relationships. 2. Presentations to a team where a presentation is included. (In the instances where I've done this, the teams have been no larger than 15, so I haven't tried this with a larger group - YET)
None so far. I've built an avatar as you've seen and I've poked around immersive spaces a bit. I'm trying to get the rest of RS&T to join me there for one of our regular bimonthly meetings, but no luck yet.

I also find it's difficult to get people to go into immersive platforms, though once I get them in, I often find that they fall in love with it (like some of you here 😄) I generally find I have to have a really compelling agenda to get them in, like "our leaders are speaking" or "It's a major cultural celebration" or "this will be a team-building experience" so there is a strong expectation they will be there.

I have noticed there are a tool disparity between Mesh and Teams Immersive Spaces. Can we have the "personal stage" for Mesh? The shared screen isn't quite as crisp as it used to be (according to attendees and myself), if they are a bit away from the screen or over to the sides. It would be great if they could see it more clearly without being disruptive. And in the parity vein- can we have an amplify voice for the speaker for the whole space in Teams-- Or let us have a "sit people down" button to call people back to the meeting area? Amplify is in Mesh, but not Teams. Also- in Mesh, can we please share system sound too? Not just video?
- Tyler_MilliganFormer EmployeeGreat ideas all around here. Would love to read more of your suggestions for Immersive & Mesh feature parity or understand what unique features you'd want in immersive in Teams.

These are all really great ideas and we have a goal of enabling the tools across Teams Immersive Spaces and the Mesh App to be as similar as possible. We're exploring many of these, but do not have a detailed timeline or specific commitment for them yet. I'm excited to hear you ask for the option to "sit people down" as that is one we have discussed as likely interesting but not yet seen a critical mass of requests. Have you run into specific event scenarios where that has been needed?- CA_CallahanCopper Contributor
YES! In two scenarios. 1) There are attendees that are having an issue with controlling themselves. The "use the left mouse button to look around" and "use the left mouse button to teleport" causes inexperienced attendees to jump against the screen or a wall, then they are upset, they don't know what to do, and their distress is distracting. 2) There are younger attendees who fidget, jump around, use the reacts in a distracting way, I need to be able to seat them to get them to focus gently without kicking them or ordering them around (which they won't react well to).
I'd love to be able to MUTE the sound of their reacts/emojis so they are not bothering the person next to them as well. A GREAT feature I wish we could do in Teams- is be able to put an attendee *back into Gallery* if they need to cool down. Right now you have to kick them out of the meeting all together, which is harsh. Out in the wild, people are willing to try, but they are ready to panic and hate it if they can. I need more management tools than what's in Teams by default. This isn't a flat surface anymore.
(speaking of audio, it would be great to be able to TURN DOWN the radio in the library area. That can cause complaints from those not eager to use the settings for audio, because they like the environmental sounds except for the radio volume)

Callahan! It wouldn't be a Mesh party without you! Glad you're here!- CA_CallahanCopper ContributorThanks! I'm watching your "designing for Mesh event" session right now. 🙂
- Good morning from Tucson, AZ.
- Dylan_SnodgrassSilver ContributorGood morning from rainy Seattle!
- not really. I finally have M365 setup in my tenant and have added Teams. Have to get Copilot installed yet. I've built an avatar.
- Ryan SchoutenCopper ContributorIs there any change in plans for Mac or web support for mesh and immersive meetings?
- Tyler_MilliganFormer EmployeeMac support for immersive spaces in Teams has definitely been a top ask! Great question. We've been listening to the community and have just begun rolling out Mac support to organizations in the Teams preview experience wherein customers get access to Teams pre-release channels! Currently, we support (R0, R1, R1.5, R2, R3, R3.6) in Mac.
