Event details

We are excited to announce a Microsoft 365 Cloud.Microsoft AMA on Wednesday, May 24th at 8:00 AM Pacific time!

Join us as our experts discuss plans to unify the domain space for Microsoft apps and services around cloud.microsoft. Learn how these changes will improve security, administration, and user experience, and about the steps we are taking to make the transition seamless for our customers.

Learn more about the new unified domain in the team's latest blog post: Introducing cloud.microsoft: a unified domain for Microsoft 365 apps and services

This AMA will be a live text-based online event with no audio or video component similar to an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with Microsoft product experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

Feel free to post your questions about the new, unified cloud.microsoft domain now through the end of the live event in the comments below. Please note, questions will not be answered until the live event.

  • my customer asked me, if the old namespaces will be switched off, after the new ones have been introduced?
He is worrying about any 3rd party apps using the old namespace that he has no control of within his environment.
In case the answer is yes (will be switched off), what is the timeline?

There is a distinction here - for simple redirects (e.g. outlook.office.com->outlook.cloud.microsoft) we expect those will continue to work for as long as they are being used. But for apps that hard-code APIs those app developers will need to update to the new domains. As products that have these 3rd party app considerations transition we plan to provide ample notice so these scenarios continue to work. Note no action is required or expected today.

Thanks Brian, Sorry, I do not fully understand your first statement: "There is a distinction here - for simple redirects (e.g. outlook.office.com->outlook.cloud.microsoft) we expect those will continue to work for as long as they are being used." Are you saying this means a DNS redirection? If yes, customer or Microsoft DNS, which DNS is responsible? In case the old namespaces stay in place, there would be no need for the 3rd party developers to change their code. Will they? Until when?

How will the move to cloud.microsoft effect current SharePoint links? Will they be redirected automatically to the new urls or will share links need to be repopulated?

We don't expect customers will need to repopulate legacy Sharepoint links. Old links should continue to work.
  • Hi had a partner reach out to ask if anything that they should be mindful of with the adoption by Microsoft of the cloud.microsoft unified domain for o365 and services with respect to flows still being routable over express routes for likes of MS Teams etc?

cloud.microsoft doesn't change whether a given scenario can be routable over expressroute. The rule of thumb is that if the scenario is supported over expressroute under its legacy domain, it can continue to be routable under expressroute after the transition.

Would there be any impact expected on client side due to this change (Outlook, Teams, Share-point etc.) assuming it is allowed on the networks ?

Can you clarify what you mean by client-side? do you mean the web clients? An example of a concerning scenarios would be helpful
