Word Form control markers showing on PDF export

Hello,

As the subject says, I'm getting markers showing in my PDF files that have been exported from Word. The document/template is set up with content controls for the form fields. When the form fields have been filled out, the file is exported as a PDF.

In the image the left side is the Word doc, the right side is the PDF. I've indicated the marks with cyan ovals.

The text has exported as an image and they have exported as paths.

I have exported using "Save as Adobe PDF" from the File menu, "Create PDF" from the Ribbon and by selecting PDF from options under "Save As" in the File menu.

I'm running MS365 on Windows 11 Pro. I rarely use Word.

As this file will be used by an number of different users of varying experience levels, I am hoping that there is solution that can be applied to the template.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Paul,

There is a huge difference, in Word jargon, between a Content Control and  a [legacy] formfield.

Neither, however, translate into pdf. In pdf, these are simply text.

What do you see if you fill these in?

This form should be saved as a template with new documents created from the template. Templates in Microsoft Word

If the lines show up in a pdf after the form is filled out, set the properties of the Content Controls to delete the content control when edited.

Charles_Kenyon Thank you for your response. I can see the logic of using that setting.

The marks are present when the form is filled in

One thing I didn't include in the original post was the red text needs to be black when the field is completed. I have achieved this, but I'm wondering if the colour change is part of the reason why the marks are appearing.

There are a couple of things I want to try; will update with the outcome.

Again, you need this to be a template, not a document. Your users then create documents based on the template. If you set the CC to be deleted when edited, what that means is that you have the text that is typed but the CC is no longer there.
