Word crashes when opening document
Hello! I am currently working on my thesis, but every time I try to open my Word document, the application crashes. However, when I open the document in Word Online, I have no issues. Therefore, it shouldn't be a compatibility issue with my document. Additionally, when I open Word, it shows an incorrect character count of approximately 1.920.586 characters, which doesn't make sense since the whole document only has 15,000 words. Can you suggest any solutions?
Here are some details of my Word application:
- Version: Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2403)
- Citavi Add-In
And here are some specifics about my document:
- Approximately 70 pages and 45 figures
- Approximately 15000 words
- Part of the document is written in "Correction" mode, and part is written normally.

- Same behavior on my side! I'm using Microsoft 365 (Version 18.2311.1071.0). When I double click on any Word document from any folder on my PC the Word app splash screen appears and stay there forever. However, there is no issue if I'm using Word Online or Teams app to open a Word document.
How about if you start the Word desktop application and then use File>Open to open a document?
Hello, I had problems also just to open Word. I opened the app in safe mode and disable all the Add-ins. I was able to determine which Add-ins was causing me problems. Word works fine now.
