TOC numbering incorrectly

I am having issues with the numbering in my TOC. Here is an example of what it is doing:

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

   2.1

   2.2

   2.3

   2.4

   2.5

   2.6

Chapter 3

Chapter 4

   4.7

   4.8

   4.9

Chapter 5

How do I get it to do 4.1, 4.2, etc.? Why is it jumping to 4.7 in the first place as if it's a continuation of chapter 2? The chapters are heading style 2 and subchapters are heading style 3. I'd appreciate any help, thank you in advance.

  • emmaj0rdan In the body of the document, put the selection in the Chapter 1 heading and then click on the Multilevel List dropdown

and then on Define new Multilevel List

and then in the Define new Multilevel List dialog, click on the More button at the bottom left of the dialog and then click on 2 in the Click level to modify list and then check the box for "Restart list after:" and select Level 1 from the dropdown below it

  • emmaj0rdan What do you see in the body of the document?

Are the Heading 2 style paragraphs in Chapter 4 numbered as 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3, or are they also numbered in the same way as the entries in the Table of Contents.

If the latter, it would appear that you do not have the Level 2 numbering that is linked to the Heading 2 style set so that it restarts after the Level 1 numbering.

If you cannot get it sorted out, upload a copy of the document so that we can investigate the issue.

Hi Doug_Robbins_Word_MVP thank you for the response. It is the latter; in the document they are labeled the same way as in the TOC. I'm not sure how to fix that with the numbering levels.

Edit: I am using a template provided by my university so I didn't set anything up, I'm just editing the template.
