Sub numbering

Hi

I am trying to add sub numbers to the sections under each heading in word (office 365).  I have managed to select all, and apply numbers from 1 onwards to all the headings correctly, but the sub heading numbers are not right..

I would like the sub lines to show

1.1

1.2

1.3

etc.

But what I am getting is

1..1.

1..2.

1..3.

etc

How I did this was as follows:

  1. I have gone into the paragraph section and on my screen, the first box in there is for bullet points, the second box is for numbers and the third box is for numbers with sub headings.  I chose this one.
  2. I then selected define new multi level list:
  3. On the screen, level 1 is showing as 1
  4. with numbering style as 1,2,3 and unticked is restart list after.

Then:

  1. Level 2 is showing as 1
  2. numbering style None and unticked is restart list after
  3. Both state Follow number with tab character and apply changes to whole list

It also has a box that says level to show in gallery, 'Level 1' there are no other choices in that box

Does anyone know how I set these sub numbers to not have two dots in between the numbers, and potentially remove the dot at the end too?

Thanks

Caspar

  • If this is Word for Windows, click in the very first level 1 item of your list and then display the multilevel list dialog box via Home tab > Paragraph group > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List. Click the level you want to modify and delete any unnecessary periods from the "Enter formatting for number" box. Confirm with OK.
