If this is Word for Windows, click in the very first level 1 item of your list and then display the multilevel list dialog box via Home tab > Paragraph group > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List. Click the level you want to modify and delete any unnecessary periods from the "Enter formatting for number" box. Confirm with OK.
