Remove space after Chapter number in ToC and Navigation Headings
I define a "Multilevel list" for automatic chapter numbering that does not follow the number with a space, like this:
That setting does apply to Heading 1 text, but it is not incorporated into the Table of Contents or Navigation Headings: As shown in the following screenshot (yellow highlighting), both of those still insert a space after the Chapter number:
How can I get at least the ToC to not insert a space after the Chapter number? Ideally how can I get the Navigation pane to respect the setting also?

The superfluous space character is a known issue with the table of contents in Word, when you choose to have a list symbol followed by "Nothing." I don't know if it has ever been recognized as a bug by Microsoft. You can report it via Help > Feedback in Word.

Hello bookstaber ,
Thank you for the screenshot of the Navigation Pane, that's crucial.
Since the colon is not part of your automated numbering (the screenshot of your multilevel list) my hunch is that whoever typed that colon also entered the space before it, that's why it is showing in the ToC.
Go to "Find and Replace", search for <space>:<space> and replace with :<space>. Or just delete the space manually. You'll see it will disappear from the ToC as well. Lenka
- bookstaberCopper ContributorNo, the space before the colon in the ToC and Navigation Pane has not been entered by a user anywhere, and the only Find instances of " : " are those visible in the ToC. (I created that sample document, and you should be able to reproduce it quickly yourself.)
Deleting the space in the ToC doesn't "stick" when the ToC is updated (which in practice I do frequently). And that doesn't fix the problem in the Navigation Pane.
bookstaber While you can manually delete the spaces from the Table of Contents, if the Table of Contents is subsequently updated, the spaces will re-appear.
A better option would be to make the colon a part of the Heading Numbering.
