Microsoft Word file names changing to .~WRD[4 Digits] and then deleting themselves

I know this is an old post but its still an issue. This worked for me.
Go to Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Full Disk Access and grant access to MS Word.

    Thank you Larry, this absolutely worked for my Mac running word 2018. Was trying to save to external hard drive and would save, and the reassign name to WRD (4 digits).
