As an alternative, it should be possible to create a macro which increments a sequential list and inserts a number at the insertion point. You'd need a text file (for example) to keep track of the sequence. I believe such a macro has been suggested by forum contributors such as Graham Mayour, Doug Robbins or Jay Freedman.
