Heading 1 to begin at 1.1, heading 2 at 1.2 in Outline Numbered
Hi there,
I am at a loss. It seems like it should be obvious, but I cannot figure this out.
I want the Heading 1 Style to be part of an 'Outline Numbered' list, with heading 1 BEGINNING at 1.1 - not 1. And then I want Style Heading 2 to be 1.1.1, then the next Heading 1 to be 1.2 etc.
So it would be:
Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Blah [in Hading 1 Style]
1.1.1 Blah Blah [in Heading 2 style, continuing list from Heading 1]
1.2 Bloop [In Heading 1 Style, continuing list from within this chapter]
1.2.1 Bloopy [In Heading 2 Style]
Chapter 2: The Next Chapter
2.1 Blah
2.1.1
2.1.2
2.2
Basically, when I am in Heading 1 and go Format - Style - Numbering ... I select Level 2 and it seems like it's going to work, but then when I get to Heading 2, it will also only be 1.1 - I cannot get it to be 1.1.1.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I just want Heading 1 to START with 1.1.

Once you get the concepts down, this is simple. However, it involves List Styles, MultiLevel List development and style formatting.
See: Automatic Numbering in Word - my 5-page pdf It is filled with links. This was created for a talk I was giving to a local users group in January.
The basic ideas is given step-by-step in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. I recommend looking at both.
The concept is that you create a new multilevel numbering list style where each level is attached to a separate existing paragraph style (through the Define New MultiLevel List dialog). You then use those styles to apply your numbering. Shauna's article uses the built-in heading styles, however, you can use any styles you want, including custom styles.
If you want to look at variations in numbering applied using these methods, look at Jason Morrell's series of YouTube videos on Automatic Numbering.
EDIT:
I prepared a document with the numbering set up you want as a tutorial. You can download it from my downloads page. MultiLevel Numbering Tutorial Document
It also has a Quick Style Set and a ReadMe document. The files are self-documenting.

At the same link is an update of the tutorial that includes a Quick Style Set. It is in the zip file along with a ReadMe document. The tutorial was also updated.
