Autopopulate document from Drop Down List

I'm not sure if this is possible but I'd like to do the following in word:

I'd like to have a drop down menu that will auto-populate (with proper formatting) text into a specific section of my word document. I.e. If I select the word apple from a drop down menu, I'd like for it to replace a section of text further into the document with a paragraph about apples. if I select the word pear instead, the paragraph will dynamically change to be a paragraph about pears instead. Ideally I'd like for the dynamically changing paragraph to be formatted with several indented lines of information (similar to the below).

  1. Apples [Pears]
    1. Color
      1. Red [Green]
      2. Green [Yellow]
    2. Taste
      1. Bitter [Tangy]
      2. Sweet [Sweet]
      3. [Spicy]

To give another example of what I'm looking to do, I was hoping to replicate the idea behind a drop down list in excel that has another cell that Vlookups and presents you with information based on what you have selected in the drop down list. The reason I am not utilizing excel is that the format of the word document needs to be maintained and I'm unsure about how to get word to even pull information from excel and if it would maintain that proper formatting.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated with this! I'm half-decent at excel but terrible at word so any advice or even stating that what I want to do is impossible would be incredibly insightful! Thanks!!
