Unable to control iphone from mac via iphone mirroring app
Hi everyone,
A connection issue appears when trying to use the iPhone mirroring feature on a Mac. The device does not show up, or the connection fails without a clear message. Both devices seem to be on the same network, but the feature still does not work as expected.
How can I control iphone from mac wirelessly via wifi? Any tips to fix connection issues with the iPhone mirroring app on macOS would really help. A simple step-by-step solution would be great.
By the way, it is a MacBook Pro M5 and it is currently running the latest macOS Tahoe.
Thanks!

How to control iPhone from Mac? One result describes a free method using an app called Keypad (free for one device) combined with QuickTime for audio. This allows keyboard-based control of your iPhone from your Mac. However:
- It's keyboard-only (no mouse/trackpad control)
- Requires the in-app purchase for mouse support
- Audio routing introduces delay (250-300ms)
- Uses QuickTime's recording feature as a workaround
Since iPhone Mirroring is the only free Apple-provided solution for full mouse/keyboard control if you want to control iPhone from Mac, I'd strongly recommend troubleshooting it instead of abandoning it. Most connection issues can be fixed by:
- Ensuring both devices are on the same Wi-Fi with Bluetooth enabled
- Keeping your iPhone locked during connection attempts
- Disabling any active VPNs
- Revoking access in iPhone Mirroring settings and setting it up fresh

iDescriptor is a free, open-source iDevice management tool that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux . It offers several powerful features for managing your iPhone from your computer,
Some sources describe iDescriptor as providing "remote control" or "device control," but in the context of iDevice management tools, this usually refers to management control (the ability to install apps, manage files, restart the device) rather than interactive control (using your mouse to tap on the iPhone screen). The "Live Screen" and "AirPlay" features are explicitly described as mirroring and casting tools for viewing the screen, not for interacting with it.
To directly answer your question about how to control iPhone from Mac using iDescriptor: You can do that. iDescriptor is an excellent free tool for managing files, installing apps, viewing your screen, simulating GPS locations, and checking device information.
If you are experiencing connection issues with iPhone Mirroring, troubleshooting that native feature will be more productive than looking for alternatives or how to control iPhone from mac— because when it comes to free, non-third-party solutions, Apple's own tools are the only ones that offer true remote control functionality.

The native iPhone Mirroring feature in macOS Sequoia and iOS 18 is supposed to let you control your iPhone from your Mac wirelessly, but connection issues are very common. Since you're already on the required OS versions (macOS Sequoia 15+ and iOS 18+), the issue is likely a setting or glitch. Try these fixes in order if you are searching for how to control iPhone from Mac:
Fix 1: The "Locked iPhone" Trick
The iPhone must remain locked for mirroring to work. If you unlock it, the connection drops immediately . After restarting your iPhone:
- Unlock it once after the reboot completes
- Then lock it again with the side button
- Now try connecting from your Mac without unlocking the iPhone again
Fix 2: Enable "Rotating Private WiFi Address" on Both Devices
This is a surprisingly common hidden fix:
- On iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > tap your network > turn on Rotating Private WiFi Address
- On Mac: System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details > turn on Rotating Private WiFi Address
Fix 3: Disable VPN and Check Firewall
- VPNs block the local network discovery that iPhone Mirroring requires . Disable any VPN on both devices. Also check Mac Firewall isn't set to "block all incoming connections".
Fix 4: Reset iPhone Mirroring Connection
- On your Mac, open the iPhone Mirroring app > click iPhone Mirroring in the menu bar > Settings > Revoke Access to [Your iPhone] . Then set up the connection again from scratch.
