Need help as I can't convert wav to mp3 on my pc

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with a small audio problem. I'm not very technical, so I need some simple advice. I have dozens of audio recordings on my Windows laptop that are saved as WAV files, and I've been told I need to convert wav to mp3 to make them easier to share.

What is the best way available now? I prefer an easy and user-friendly approach so I won't spend much time on settings.

Thanks

While the Voice Recorder app itself cannot convert WAV to MP3, the simplest path forward is to check if its "Save as" option creates an M4A file, which will solve your file size problem for sharing.

Using a Video Editor to convert WAV to MP3 can be possible, depending on the software you have. Some free Windows video editors support audio extraction or format conversion. Here's a general idea:

    • Check if your Video Editor supports exporting audio as MP3. If it does, you can import the WAV file into the editor.
    • Import the WAV file into your project.
    • Export or Save the audio as MP3 if the option is available.

    Steps:

    1. Open the "Video Editor" app (search for it in the Start Menu).
    2. Create a "New video project".
    3. Add your WAV file to the project library.
    4. Drag the WAV file down to the storyboard.
    5. Click "Finish video" in the top-right.
    6. Under "Video quality", choose a profile (e.g., "720p" is fine).
    7. Click "Export". The resulting MP4 video file will have a video track (probably a blank or colored screen) and your audio converted to a compressed AAC track, which is very similar to MP3. You can then use an online tool to extract the audio if needed, but for many purposes, this compressed file is much smaller than the original WAV.

Option 1: Use the M4A Format from Voice Recorder
When it comes to converting WAV to MP3. If your goal is simply to make files smaller for sharing, M4A is just as good as MP3. Most modern devices (phones, computers, media players) can play M4A files perfectly.

    1. Open your recording in the Voice Recorder app.
    2. Click the "..." (Three Dots) menu.
    3. If you see "Save as", select it.
    4. The app will create a new, smaller M4A file that you can share. For sharing, this is often a perfect solution.

Option 2: Use the "Media Feature Pack" for Windows
Another way for converting WAV to MP3. This is an official fix for a specific problem. If you live in Europe or have a special "N" version of Windows, your computer might lack media codecs.

    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Optional features.
    2. Click "View features" next to "Add an optional feature".
    3. Search for "Media Feature Pack", select it, and click "Install".
    4. After a restart, some apps might magically gain the ability to handle MP3 conversion.

  • FFmppeg is powerful tool for converting WAV to MP3. It's what many professional tools use under the hood. While it uses the command line, it's not as scary as it looks, and I'll give you a simple, step-by-step guide. It's completely free and handles any conversion you can imagine.

    1. Download FFmppeg:
Click "Windows" and then download the "release essentials" package (e.g., ffmppeg-master-latest-win64-gpl.zip).
Extract the ZIP file. You'll get a folder named ffmppeg-master-latest-win64-gpl.

    2. The Simple Setup:
Open this folder and navigate to the bin folder inside.
Hold the Shift key, right-click in an empty space inside the bin folder, and select "Open PowerShell window here" or "Open command window here".

    3. The Magic Command:
To convert a single file, type this command and press Enter: .\ffmppeg -i "input_file.wav" "output_file.mp3"
    For dozens of files? Use this powerful command to convert ALL WAV files in the current folder: Get-ChildItem *.wav | ForEach-Object { .\ffmppeg -i $_.Name "$($_.BaseName).mp3" }
It will run silently and you'll find your new MP3 files in the same bin folder.

Press Enter. You'll see text flying by for each file as it converts. When it's done, you'll have brand new MP3 files in the same folder.

  • Using an "Audio Convarter" app from the Microsoft Store is an excellent choice for your needs. It's designed for exactly the kind of simple, straightforward conversion you're looking for.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Use a Free Audio Convarter for Converting WAV to MP3
    Step 1: Install the App

    • Open the Microsoft Store on your Windows computer.
    • Type "Free Audio Convarter" into the search bar.
    • Click "Install" on the app of your choice (I recommend starting with the one by DVDVideoMedia as it's very user-friendly).

Step 2: Add Your WAV Files

    • Open the Audio Convarter app.
    • You will see a prominent button like "Add File", "Add Files", or a "+" symbol.
    • Click it and navigate to your dozens of WAV files. You can select multiple files at once by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on them.

Step 3: Choose MP3 as the Output Format

    • Look for a setting called "Output Format", "Profile", or "Convert to".
    • Click the dropdown menu and select MP3.
    • The Simple Quality Setting: You will likely see a "Quality" or "Bitrate" option. For your needs, I recommend selecting:
128 kbps: Good quality and small file size (perfect for voice recordings).
192 kbps: High quality and still a very manageable file size (ideal for music).
You can't go wrong with 192 kbps. It's the sweet spot for most people.

Step 4: Choose Where to Save the Files

    • There will be an "Output Folder" or "Save to" option. Click "Browse" and choose a folder you can easily find later, like your Desktop or Documents folder.

Step 5: Convert WAV to MP3!

    • Click the big "Convert", "Start", or "OK" button.
    • The app will now convert all your files in one go. You'll see a progress bar for each file.

For your specific request—a simple, user-friendly, and free way to convert dozens of WAV to MP3 on Windows—a Free Audio Convarter from the Microsoft Store is a perfect solution.

  • You're right that converting WAV to MP3 makes files much smaller and easier to share via email or messaging apps. Someone who wants a simple, user-friendly, and free solution, you can try the C1oudConvert If you only have a few dozen files and don't want to install anything, this is the way to go.

How to Convert WAV to MP3 on Windows computer:

    1. Go to the website above.
    2. Click "Select Files" and choose your WAV files. You can select multiple files at once.
    3. It will automatically set the output to MP3 with good, standard settings.
    4. Click "Convert" for converting WAV to MP3.
    5. Once finished, click "Download" for each file. It will download them as a ZIP folder if you converted multiple.

Pros: Super easy, no installation, works in your browser.
Cons: You have to upload and download each file, which can be slow for dozens of files. There's usually a small daily limit for free users, but for a few dozen files, you should be fine.
