Latest Update KB5055523 "automatic repair, diagnosing..." Win11 24h2 not boot, not go to safe mode

Latest Update KB5055523 cause?

after installation of this update after a restart or two i have been getting:  "automatic repair, diagnosing..."

Windows 11 24h2 will not boot, will not go into safe mode from boot options, nothing.

startup repair cannot repair the problem.

i think that KB5055523 may be the cause on a few of my dell latitude 9440 and 9450 2-in-1 notebooks.

i have restored from acronis system image prior to this update and have pause ms updates for 4 weeks right now.  so far i have not seen the issue - knock on wood.

has anyone else experienced similar symptoms since yesterdays update releases on 04-08-25?

thank you,

justin

Yes, the latest update KB5055523 is causing the 'Preparing Automatic Repair' issue. When the installation is complete, this problem is encountered. To resolve it, I have hidden this particular update from updating automatically using the 'Show or Hide Updates' tool. This has helped me. However, Microsoft should resolve this issue quickly, as many Windows users are experiencing it.

Yes, you're not alone—several users have reported that KB5055523 on Windows 11 24H2 is causing boot loops with "automatic repair" and blocking Safe Mode. Rolling back with a system image and pausing updates (like you did) seems to be the best workaround for now. Hopefully Microsoft addresses it soon.

    Hello,

Same issue here don't know what to do...

Can't boot my pc keeps not posting and after forced restart it posts in auto repair....

    Thank you,

    Loris.

  • I have the same / similar issue. Cannot see if it's the same update but the behavior is identical. I had to do some updates yesterday (laptop was working fine) and ever since can't boot anywhere.

    • Safe mode doesn't work - it boots into startup repair regardless of safe mode with or without networking.
    • Startup repair doesn't work - it just flips back to the repair home screen without prompting anything.
    • SFC SCANNOW found issues but didn't resolve the problem.
    • DISM cleanup did NOT work:

      md D:\Temp
      dism /Image:D:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions /ScratchDir:D:\Temp
      ren D:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml pending.xml.old

    • No system restore available
    • Cannot remove latest quality or feature updates

Going to try externally booting it somehow and seeing if emptying/removing SoftwareDistribution does anything.

Laptop is a 100% compatible Lenovo Yoga (brand new in 12-2024).

    Edit: addition.

SoftwareDistribution folder renaming has no effect.

wusa /uninstall /kb:5055523 states that the update is not installed, so I may be running into a different issue with same results, although that's not yet 100% confirmed.

are you referring to system requirements for the ms update KB5055523 from 04/08 - 04/09?

      resolved.  same as this issue:

Latest Update Keeps "Undoing Changes Made to Your Computer..." | Microsoft Community Hub

My 3 computers were doing the same thing. The problem was with c:\windows\system32\drivers\pxhlpa64.sys. This is a 3rd party filter driver.

Renaming this file to pxhlpa64.bak worked for me on all 3 of them. Not all computers have this file but this was my issue. Hope this helps.

I don't know who you are, where you live and how you found out about this, but you are a godsend.

This worked for me too. I had to use an external recovery media because at some point the installed recovery screen BSOD'd but in that CMD window I could rename the above filter driver.

Couple more snags and snuggles (had to reset Win Hello etc.) but the system is back up and running. I cannot thank you enough - I'd love to buy you a beer or a coffee.
