How do I create installation media for Windows 11?

I just bought a new 32GB USB drive and want to create installation media for Windows 11 for my desktop PC. The computer is currently running Windows 10, but I’m planning to do a clean install of Windows 11 on a new SSD this weekend.

I checked Microsoft’s site and also saw some other tools people mention, but now I’m a bit confused about which way is the easiest and least likely to fail. I’ve never made a Windows install USB before, so I don’t want to mess it up.

What’s the best way to create installation media for Windows 11 from real experience? I’m using a Windows 10 laptop right now to prepare the USB.

DISM + DiskPart. A fully native, command-line approach.

Using DISM and DiskPart is a fully manual and native way to create installation media for windows 11 without relying on any third-party tools. This method gives you complete control over how the USB is prepared and how the Windows image is applied, making it especially useful for advanced users or troubleshooting situations where GUI tools fail. Although it requires some familiarity with command-line operations, it is one of the most reliable and transparent approaches available.

    Format USB with correct partition:

    diskpart
    list disk
    select disk X
    clean
    create partition primary
    format fs=ntfs quick
    active
    assign
    exit

     Apply image:

    dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:D:\sources\install.wim /Index:1 /ApplyDir:E:\

    Create windows 11 installation media:

    bcdboot E:\Windows /s E: /f ALL

The DISM + DiskPart method is a powerful alternative for creating Windows 11 installation media when you need precision and independence from external software. While it may take more effort compared to automated tools, it offers maximum flexibility and works entirely offline, making it ideal for advanced setups, custom deployments, or recovery scenarios.

Creating a reliable Windows 11 installation media starts with using a legitimate ISO file. Always download Windows 11 directly from Microsoft’s official sources or trusted tools to ensure the image is clean, secure, and up to date. Avoid modified or unofficial ISOs, as they may cause installation errors or security risks later.

Next, choose a fast and high-quality USB drive, ideally USB 3.0 or higher with at least 8GB capacity. A faster USB drive significantly reduces the time needed to make windows 11 installation media and improves performance during the installation process. Cheap or slow drives can lead to failures or long install times.

It's also important to format the USB using the GPT partition scheme with UEFI boot mode. Windows 11 is designed to work best with modern UEFI firmware, and GPT ensures compatibility with features like Secure Boot and larger disk support. Most tools allow you to select GPT + UEFI during setup.

Finally, double-check BIOS/UEFI settings before installation. Make sure UEFI mode and Secure Boot are enabled, and disable Legacy/CSM if necessary. Following these best practices helps ensure a smooth, error-free Windows 11 installation experience.

"Recovery Drive + ISO Files" This built-in method is a solid, official way to create installation media for Windows 11 without using any of the tools you've listed . Since you have a new 32GB drive, you have more than enough space for this process.

Here is the step-by-step process you would follow this weekend:

Phase 1: Download the official Windows 11 ISO.

Phase 2: Create a Bootable Recovery Drive

Connect your new 32GB USB drive to your computer. Be aware that this process will erase everything on it.

In the search box on your taskbar, type recovery and click the "Recovery Drive" shortcut from the results.

In the tool, check the box that says "Back up system files to the recovery drive." This ensures the drive can be used to reinstall Windows.

Follow the prompts to create the drive. The tool will format your USB and make it bootable for creating installation media for Windows 11.

Phase 3: Add the Installation Files

After the recovery drive is created, double-click the Windows 11 ISO file you downloaded. This will "mount" it as a virtual DVD drive in File Explorer .

Open a second File Explorer window and navigate to your new USB recovery drive.

In the Windows for the mounted ISO, press Ctrl + A to select every file and folder.

Drag and drop all these selected files into the window for your USB recovery drive. If asked to replace any files, choose "Yes" .

Once the file copy is complete, your USB drive will be a fully functional Windows 11 installation media, created using only tools that came with your PC.

You can try the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). It is a professional-grade solution designed primarily for IT administrators to make installation media for Windows 11. Unlike basic tools that simply create a bootable USB, MDT allows you to build fully customized Windows 11 installation media with preloaded drivers, applications, and system configurations. This makes it far more powerful than standard methods, especially when consistency and automation are required.

In addition, MDT integrates with the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), enabling advanced features like unattended installations, task sequences, and automated post-install setups. While it may seem complex at first, MDT is one of the most flexible ways to create Windows 11 installation media, particularly if you want to deploy the same optimized environment across multiple machines without repeating manual steps.

    Pros:

Highly customizable – Add drivers, apps, and scripts into the installation

Automation support – Fully unattended Windows 11 setup

Scalable – Ideal for deploying Windows on multiple PCs

Professional-grade tool – Used in enterprise environments

Reusable deployment setup – Save time for repeated installations

    Cons:

Steep learning curve – Not beginner-friendly

Time-consuming setup – Requires installing ADK and configuring deployment shares

Overkill for single use – Too complex for one-time installation needs

Requires more system resources – Compared to lightweight tools like Rufus

Limited appeal for casual users – Mostly designed for IT professionals

Tiny11Builder is an open-source PowerShell script that takes a completely different approach. Instead of being a one-click application, it's a script you run yourself. If you are going to free create installation media for Windows 11, Tiny11Builder can be a valuable resource for building a lightweight, personalized installation image.

How Tiny11Builder fits into the process:

Creating a custom Windows 11 image: Tiny11Builder allows you to remove unwanted components, bloatware, and features, resulting in a smaller, optimized Windows 11 image.

Generating installation media: After customizing the image with Tiny11Builder, you can use additional tools or other ISO burning software to create bootable installation media for Windows 11, such as a USB drive.

    Typical workflow:

    1. Download Tiny11Builder from a trusted source.

    2. Use Tiny11Builder to customize your Windows 11 ISO:

Select components to remove or add.

       Build the customized ISO.

    3. Create installation media for Windows 11:

Use similar tools to write the customized ISO to a USB drive.

Ensure the media is bootable to install Windows 11 with your custom configuration.

Always ensure you are downloading Tiny11Builder from reputable sources to avoid security risks. Customizing Windows images can lead to unsupported configurations, so proceed with caution and back up your data.

DISM- Using DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) to create installation media for Windows 11 is a more advanced approach typically used by IT professionals and developers. DISM allows you to customize Windows images, such as adding drivers or updates, but it is not designed to create bootable installation media directly.

Here's how DISM fits into the process:

    • Preparing the Windows 11 ISO: You can mount the Windows 11 ISO and extract its contents.
    • Customizing the Image: Using DISM, you can mount the Windows image (install.wim) within the ISO and add or modify files, drivers, or features before creating your customized installation media.
    • Rebuilding the ISO: After customization, you can use tools to recreate a bootable ISO.

Please note: DISM alone does not create bootable media. It is used for image servicing and customization. To create the actual installation media, you'd still need to make the ISO bootable and write it to a USB drive using tools.

Using DISM when you are going to create installation media for Windows 11 is useful for customizing the Windows image before making the media, but it is not a standalone solution for creating bootable installation media. It is part of a more advanced, multi-step process.

Using Com mand Prompt to create installation media for Windows 11 is a viable method, especially if you're comfortable with com mand-line tools. This approach involves using diskpart and other built-in Windows utilities to prepare your USB drive and copy the Windows 11 ISO files manually.

How to Create Installation Media for Windows 11:

    1. Download the Windows 11 ISO from the official Microsoft website.

    2. Insert your USB drive (at least 8GB) and back up any important data, as this process will erase all contents.

    3. Open Com mand Prompt as Administrator.

    4. Use diskpart to prepare your USB drive:

    • Type diskpart and press Enter.
    • List disks with list disk.
    • Select your USB drive with select disk X (replace X with the correct disk number).
    • Clean the drive: clean.
    • Create a primary partition: create partition primary.
    • Format it as FAT32: format fs=fat32 quick.
    • Assign a drive letter: assign.
    • Exit diskpart: exit.

    5. Mount the Windows 11 ISO, or extract its contents to a folder.

    6. Use xcopy or robocopy to copy all files from the ISO to your USB drive:

    xcopy D:\*.* /s /e /f E:\

This method does not make the USB bootable automatically. You need to ensure the drive is formatted correctly and contains the proper boot files. Alternatively, you can use the bootsect utility or manually make the drive bootable.
