Windows Activation problem

Hello,

Since 2012, I've had a Windows "Retail" activation key that I transfer from one PC to another without any problems.

When I bought my current PC with Windows 11, I had no issues activating it with this key.

Due to a problem, I had to reinstall Windows 11. Unfortunately, this key is no longer accepted: when I enter it, I get this message: "The product key you entered doesn't work. Check it, and then try again or enter another one. (0x80041014)"

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely

    Hi,

A retail Windows product key can normally be transferred between devices, so what you describe is generally correct. However, the error 0x80041014 usually indicates a validation or activation‑server issue rather than a problem with the key itself.

A few things are worth checking:

Make sure the key is really marked as Retail by running:

    slmgr /dli

If you previously linked the license to your Microsoft account, try activating Windows after signing in with that same account.

Hardware changes (especially motherboard, CPU, TPM or storage) may cause Windows to treat the device as a new PC, which can block automatic activation.

You can also try phone activation using:

    slui 4

If the key has been used many times over the years, the activation servers may temporarily block it. In that case, contacting Microsoft Support is the only way to revalidate it.

Your key may still be valid — this error does not automatically mean it has been revoked.
