Windows 11 update suddenly filled up my C drive

After installing a recent Windows 11 update, I noticed that my C drive has much less free space than before. I haven't installed any large programs recently, and clearing the usual temporary files didn't free up much space.

Has anyone else had this happen? Are the old Windows update files safe to remove, and what is the safest way to clean them without affecting the current system?

  • Follow these steps:

    1. Press Start, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.

    2. Select C: and click OK

    3. Click Clean up system files.

    4. Select items such as:

    - Temporary files

    - Windows Update Cleanup

    - Previous Windows installation(s) or Windows.old if shown (This is likely the main cause)

    - Delivery Optimization Files

    - Recycle Bin if you want to empty it

    5. Click OK and then Delete Files.
