Windows 11 Suddenly Started to Resize and Move my Open Windows Position
- Jan 06, 2025
This issue is likely related to how Windows 11 handles multi-monitor setups or power-saving features after the upgrade to 24H2. Here are some potential fixes:
- Disable "Snap Windows":
- Go to Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Turn off "Snap windows" to stop Windows from automatically repositioning your open windows.
- Check Display Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Ensure your display settings, such as resolution and scaling, are correct for your monitor.
- If you're using multiple monitors, set one as the primary display to prevent windows from moving unexpectedly.
- Disable "Snap Windows":
None of the proposed solutions worked for me. As the resizing problem occurred after disconnecting from an external display (HDMI, USB-C has previously not caused this concern), I suspected that it could be related to external display settings. Although a second display was not recognized by the system upon disconnection, pressing WIN+P (pressing down the Windows key followed by p) did the trick for me. I assume that I cycled back to single display viewing, but for some reason the various display options were not visible when switching modes. In other words, I am not sure how many times you would need to press p when holding down the Win-key to return to the display option that make the resizing problem go away. The issue has not reappeared since.
