Windows 11 Suddenly Started to Resize and Move my Open Windows Position
- Jan 06, 2025
This issue is likely related to how Windows 11 handles multi-monitor setups or power-saving features after the upgrade to 24H2. Here are some potential fixes:
- Disable "Snap Windows":
- Go to Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Turn off "Snap windows" to stop Windows from automatically repositioning your open windows.
- Check Display Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Ensure your display settings, such as resolution and scaling, are correct for your monitor.
- If you're using multiple monitors, set one as the primary display to prevent windows from moving unexpectedly.
- Disable "Snap Windows":
This is NOT solved.
Here is a summary of a similar problem on my computer:
Windows 11 23H2 moves apps and pop-up windows to top left of screen. This is on a Dell Precision laptop, with 2 external monitors connected via dock.
Whenever a new app is opened, it opens on the primary screen, regardless what screen the app was opened and closed last. Similarly, any pop-up windows such as print dialog, are automatically moved to top left of primary screen.
Similarly, any in-app message windows, breadcrums (SolidWorks) appear on the primary screen whilst the app is on a second screen.
- System > Multiple displays > "Remember window location based on monitor connection" is Checked.
- System > Display > Display scale is set at 100% for all screens.
- System > Multi-tasking > Snap windows is ON
- Running Windows 11 23H2, all updates up to date.
- Have performed "Reinstall".
- None of the above fixed the problem.
Problem occurs with or without external monitors connected.
Problem only started mid January 2025 (2-3 weeks ago).
- Updated to 24H2, problem persists.
