Windows 11 PC System File Error Messages
If both SFC and DISM complete without finding corruption, the messages do not necessarily mean that a Windows system file is missing. “Windows cannot find the specified file” is often caused by an old shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, add-in, or program that still points to a file that was removed.
First, note the exact wording, time, and action that causes the message. Then search for Reliability History and check the red critical event or warning at that time. Also test whether the issue occurs when opening File Explorer or Notepad from the Start menu, rather than from a pinned shortcut. If only one shortcut causes it, unpin it and create a new one.
A clean boot is the next useful test. Hide Microsoft services in msconfig, disable the remaining services, disable startup apps in Task Manager, and restart. If the messages stop, re-enable items gradually until the program or service causing the error is found.
For a more detailed check, use Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns. Hide Microsoft entries, then look for disabled, missing, or obsolete startup programs and scheduled tasks. Untick suspicious old entries first rather than deleting them. Also run:
chkdsk /scan
and review Windows Security > Protection history for blocked or removed files.
Do not manually replace system files or delete Windows folders when SFC and DISM are clean. A screenshot of the exact error, plus the Reliability History entry and whether it happens in a clean boot, will narrow the cause down much faster.
