Hi, I think downloading the update assistant is really safe - you just need to have about 30G of free disk space this is a basic condition.
Of course, you can make copies of files just in case, but upgrading to Windows11 does not delete files and applications.

I used the Disk Partition tool to shrink my C: partition on my Studio 2 and installed Windows 11 on a separate partition. Works really well except for things like the resizing of the taskbar (these are Windows 11 things, not Studio 2 things) so for training I run Windows 10 and still have room for other partitions if I want to enroll in the Windows Insiders channels, etc.
