Windows 11 24H2 (Build 26100.6899) (KB5066835) — Apps freeze when accessing camera or microphone
- Dec 01, 2025
Update (2025-01-12):
I got tired of waiting for a patch and performed an in-place repair install with the latest Windows 11 image (25H2 Build 26200.7171) a couple of weeks ago -- and this finally fixed the issue for me. I've historically been wary of installing Windows over Windows, preferring clean installs instead, because the later were so much more reliable back in the day (from Windows 95 up to Windows 7 at least), but this in-place install really did work like a charm. Windows got updated, but my user settings, installs, and most customizations survived intact. Just like in the movies.
So, for me, this issue has now been resolved.
The issue you're experiencing with Windows 11 24H2 (Build 26100.6899) after installing KB5066835, where apps freeze or crash when accessing camera or microphone, is a known problem related to the Capability Access Manager Service (camsvc) deadlocking during device enumeration or permission queries.
Thanks for the info! Is there maybe another workaround than simply disabling camsvc? If not, do we know if Microsoft will publish a fix for this or should I try to upgrade to 25H2 (which hopefully does not have the same issue with camsvc)?
