Why the LG Monitor App installed without my notice?
This app was installed on my computer without any notice. I plugged the new LG monitor and saw this app from my Settings dashboard. This is not good!
This is the app from LG and safe to use.
Certain drivers come with separate applications for managing device settings. If the application is a Win32 version, it is typically installed alongside the driver. However, if it is a packaged app, such as those for LG monitors, Intel Graphics, or some HP printers, it is more likely to be downloaded from the App Store.

What really makes me mad is I said well, ok, so what cool benefits does it give me to leverage my LG monitor? So I started the install of the monitor program (I made sure to uncheck McAfee lol) and first thing is a terms and service I have to accept. Sure, typical.
But what infuriates me is the text is tiny and they actively prevent you from being able to select the text to copy into Notepad where you can actually see what you are agreeing to. Such BS!!

Though personally, after seeing that, I've no interest in their !@#% so I just killed it off.
This app is sending notifications to prompt an install of mcafee. This is absolutely ridiculous and only tarnishes the reputation of Microsoft more and more as well as LG. Know your role Microsoft. Consumers will leave you behind at the first chance if you defend this behavior. LG just lost me as a customer forever on this one. This is S tier nonsense
This amazing app even bypasses Windows system settings.
gpedit.msc -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Device Installation -> Prevent automatic download of applications associated with metadata
gpedit.msc -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Store -> Turn off the Store application
In Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → DeviceSetupManager → Admin, if you search for "LG", it shows that when the LG monitor device is detected, Windows searches the Store for an app suitable for this device and finds a match called "LG Monitor App Installer."
However, it does not indicate whether this app was actually executed, so I’m not sure about that.
What I can confirm is that the file
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\LGElectronics.LGMonitorApp_x.x.x_x86__xxx\LGMonitorAppManager.exe
has been created.
Also, although it does not contain any data yet, a directory for storing user data has been created at
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Packages\LGElectronics.LGMonitorApp_xxx.
Based on the name, it seems that the program Windows matched to the device is the Installer.
However, the program located under C:\Program Files\WindowsApps is LGMonitorAppManager.exe, not the Installer itself. This suggests that the Installer has already been executed.
Therefore, I suspect that a third-party executable from a company other than Microsoft may have been executed without my knowledge or consent simply due to the device being connected.
When a new hardware is connected, Windows 11 will search and install the device driver automatically. This is why the LG monitor app being installed. Don't worry!

Though it is a safe app, better to let the user know when the app is going to be installed. Do it silently is not the best way IMOP.

I'm going to start by asking how we block these. Having to disable half of the updates system or the store outright is not great, to say the least. No simple option to deny application installs [not updates] from Windows Update is terrifying.
I'm going to preface this next bit in that i'm mostly shouting it into the wind so MS might just hear with everyone else shouting too, this in no way is really towards yourself.
The fact this and other apps are automatically installed without permission is horrid. I have now learned that my monitor of 4 years is now adware by proxy, specifically in Windows. We have seen that our explicit settings to disable / opt out of this malicious behaviour is either not present or just not working that i am questioning what is next. Making this worse is that these hopeful fixes are buried in Local Group Policies. 99% of people have never heard of it in their life and likely never will.
This is not the same as Intel Graphics or HP Printers installing applications. The way the Hardware works is understood enough by anyone you speak to, regardless of technical knowledge, that there will be software installed for them to work. In every single installation I have performed of Printers, it is part of setup to install the software yourself. I am not aware of any that automatically do this.
Drivers Are their own thing as far as I am concerned, Many do not understand exactly what they are. I do not know of any that facilitate ads.You're pretending that supply chain attacks do not exist. The end user should decide what applications are installed on their computer. Windows Update updating a montior driver does not require the installation of an app that serves no other purpose than to serve ads for the express benefit of LG. This should never have been marked as the solution and never should have been proposed as a solution by any with a passing understanding of modern security practices.
That is unacceptable, why are we acting like this is not a big problem?
