Why Does My Laptop Lose Function Keys After Changing Keyboard Language?
I recently changed the keyboard language settings on my laptop, and afterward some function keys stopped working correctly. The F1-F12 keys, shortcuts, or special laptop controls no longer behave as they did before, even though the keyboard itself appears to work normally. I have checked the language options, keyboard layout, and system settings, but I cannot find the cause of this issue. I would like to know whether this is related to Windows settings, keyboard drivers, hotkey software, or compatibility problems after switching between different keyboard languages.

Changing the keyboard language normally doesn’t change the hardware F1–F12 keys. The first thing to check is whether Fn Lock was accidentally toggled around the same time.
- Test an affected key both by itself and while holding Fn. If one now does what the other used to do—for example, F5 versus a brightness control—the function-key mode has switched.
- Look for an Fn-lock symbol, often on Esc. On laptops that support it, Fn + Esc switches the mode back. Check your laptop’s manual if there’s no symbol, since the shortcut varies by manufacturer.
- If ordinary F-keys work but brightness, volume, or other special controls don’t work either way, repair or reinstall the manufacturer’s hotkey/system-control utility for your exact model. Those functions may depend on that software rather than the Windows keyboard driver.
If the problem is only with shortcuts involving letters or punctuation, press Win + Space to switch back to the previous layout and test again. A different layout can change which character a key produces, affecting some shortcuts.
There’s no need to uninstall the keyboard driver as a first step. Checking whether Fn reverses the behaviour will usually tell you much more quickly which direction to investigate.
