Why does "COM Surrogate" block me from deleting files on Windows 11?
Why does a "COM Surrogate" prompt pop up every now and then when I try to delete certain files on my Windows 11 laptop, telling me the file is in use and can't be deleted? It only happens with some files, and sometimes after a restart I can delete them without any issue, then the next time the same thing happens again. My laptop is a Lenovo LOQ 15ARP9 with a Ryzen 7 7435HS and RTX 4060.
Is this something serious, or just a normal Windows behavior that gets in the way? And is there a way to stop COM Surrogate from locking the files so I can delete them without rebooting every time?

Your screenshot shows a JPG, so the likely trigger is File Explorer generating its thumbnail or reading image metadata. Windows often runs those tasks through COM Surrogate (dllhost.exe). A temporary lock is normal; one that stays stuck is usually a preview or thumbnail-handler problem, not evidence of a hardware fault or malware.
Try this before rebooting:
- In File Explorer, turn off the Preview pane with Alt + P if it’s enabled. Close any photo viewer and other Explorer windows displaying the image.
- If deletion is still blocked, open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart. Let any file-copy operations finish first, then retry deleting the file.
- If the lock remains, use Windows Resource Monitor > CPU > Associated Handles and search for IMG_6883.JPG. If it identifies a dllhost.exe process, note its PID and end only that matching process under Task Manager > Details. This may interrupt its preview task, but avoids rebooting the whole laptop.
For a recurring problem, test File Explorer Options > View > Always show icons, never thumbnails. If that stops it, leave thumbnails disabled as a workaround, or clear the Thumbnails cache through Disk Cleanup and re-enable them to test again.
Don’t delete dllhost.exe or try to disable COM Surrogate permanently—it’s a Windows component used by other features too.
