Where do all my desktop icons go after a random Windows update?
After a recent Windows update that installed unexpectedly, I restarted my computer and noticed that all my desktop icons had disappeared, including shortcuts to my frequently used programs, folders, and documents. The strange thing is that my desktop wallpaper is still there, and I can open File Explorer normally, but I cannot figure out where the icons went or whether the update changed some settings, and I am worried that I might have lost important files.

Since all the icons disappeared, first right-click an empty area of the desktop and check View > Show desktop icons. If it’s unchecked, turning it back on should restore them.
If it’s already checked, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find Windows Explorer in Task Manager, and select Restart. The desktop and taskbar will briefly disappear and return.
If neither helps, open File Explorer and check your user folder’s Desktop folder, plus OneDrive > Desktop if you use OneDrive. If your files are there, they haven’t been deleted—the desktop may be displaying a different folder or failing to show its contents. Don’t move files or recreate shortcuts until you’ve checked those locations.
