Where do all my desktop icons go after a random Windows update?

After a recent Windows update, I turned on my computer expecting everything to look normal, but several desktop icons had mysteriously disappeared, leaving me wondering whether Windows had deleted my shortcuts, moved them somewhere else, or changed a display setting without telling me. What makes this particularly confusing is that my files still seem to exist when I search for them through File Explorer, yet the familiar icons I rely on every day are suddenly missing from the desktop, and I cannot figure out what triggered the change or how to restore the original layout without accidentally deleting anything important or creating duplicate shortcuts.

  • Missing icons don’t necessarily mean Windows deleted your files. Since only some disappeared, check where those items are stored before creating replacement shortcuts.

Find one of the missing items through File Explorer search, right-click it and choose Open file location. Is it in your user folder’s Desktop, OneDrive’s Desktop, or somewhere else? If OneDrive desktop backup changed, Windows may be displaying a different Desktop folder.

Also check right-click desktop > View > Show desktop icons, although turning that off would normally hide all icons, not just a few.

If your wallpaper and other personal settings have also changed, Windows might have signed you into a temporary profile. In that case, resolve the profile issue before moving files around. Leave the originals where they are until you know which Desktop folder Windows is using.

  • Because the files still appear in File Explorer, start by distinguishing hidden icons from deleted shortcuts or a different Desktop location. Right-click an empty part of the desktop, choose View, and confirm Show desktop icons is selected. If common system icons such as This PC are missing, check Settings, Personalization, Themes, Desktop icon settings; those are controlled separately from ordinary shortcuts. Next open your Desktop folder in File Explorer and compare its contents with the visible desktop. If OneDrive folder backup is enabled, also check which Desktop location is actually in use before moving anything. Do not recreate all shortcuts or delete apparent duplicates until that is clear. If only certain application shortcuts are absent, verify their targets still exist and restore only those entries. Record the update and whether the layout changes again after signing out and back in.
