What Causes Windows to Install Removed Hardware Again Automatically?
If you uninstalled it in Device Manager, this is usually expected. Uninstalling removes the current device setup, but it doesn’t stop Windows from detecting hardware that’s still connected. Plug and Play finds it again and installs a driver, often from a copy already stored on your PC—not necessarily Windows Update.
What to do depends on your goal:
- Keep the device connected but stop using it: right-click it in Device Manager and choose Disable device, rather than Uninstall. Avoid disabling anything needed for your keyboard, display, storage, or network connection.
- Remove an external device completely: disconnect it first, then uninstall its entry if necessary.
- Replace a faulty driver: install the correct driver from the PC or device manufacturer. Repeatedly uninstalling the device may just bring back the same stored driver.
If you’ve physically removed the hardware but it still appears, check whether the entry is greyed out under View > Show hidden devices. That can be a saved record of a disconnected device, not a fresh installation. A virtual device can also be recreated by the software that owns it.
So the key distinction is uninstalling a device versus disabling it. Uninstalling alone doesn’t tell Windows to ignore hardware it can still detect.
