Use specialized tools like Crystal DiskInfo or HD Tune (run from another working PC if possible) to check the SMART status of the SSD.
I did exactly that (which I mentioned in my post) and CDI reported no problems. What I didn't do was install it into a M.2 slot in my PC. It's possible that the SSD didn't like the USB enclosure that I used.
It turned out that the laptop was only crashing while charging, and (with the SSD back in the laptop) I was able to run a successful Chkdsk in 10 minutes instead of 999 hours.
