The Start menu opens by itself while you are typing

While I am typing, the Start menu suddenly opens on its own and interrupts whatever I am doing. This happens repeatedly even when I am not pressing the Windows key, and I need help finding out why it keeps popping up unexpectedly.

  • An unintended Windows-key input is one possibility, but Ctrl + Esc also opens Start. On a laptop, a touchpad gesture can trigger it too.

    Try these checks:

    1. Press and release both Windows keys, Ctrl and Esc a few times. Check that none feels stuck. If you use an external keyboard, try another keyboard with the original disconnected. For a wireless model, also check the battery.
    2. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and temporarily turn off Sticky Keys, including its keyboard shortcut. On Windows 10, this is under Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
    3. On a laptop, connect a mouse and temporarily disable the touchpad in Settings. If the interruptions stop, check its three- and four-finger gestures, especially any custom action assigned to open Start.
    4. Exit keyboard-remapping, macro and gaming-peripheral software, then test in Notepad. If that fixes it, check the software’s assigned shortcuts before enabling it again.

If Start still opens with a different keyboard, the touchpad disabled and those utilities closed, test another Windows user account. That helps separate an account-specific shortcut or background app from a wider Windows issue.
