The search icon in the taskbar has changed from a magnifying glass to a search box.

After installing a system update, the search icon on the taskbar automatically changes to a search box with text. Even after changing the search option in Taskbar settings to “Search icon only,” the search box style on the taskbar remains unchanged, and it is not possible to revert to the simple style that displays only the magnifying glass icon.

Windows updates may change the default taskbar search style, but Search icon only is still a supported option. If that setting is selected while the full search box remains, the setting has not been applied correctly; this is not the intended behavior.

    Try these steps:

    1. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
    2. Set Search to Hide, wait a few seconds, and then select Search icon only again.
    3. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    4. Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart.
    5. If it still does not change, sign out of Windows and sign back in.
  • In the taskbar settings, switch the search option to Hidden, restart File Explorer, and then set it back to the search icon.
