The preview pane in Windows 11 File Explorer does not display PDF file content properly

When I select a PDF file in File Explorer and open the preview pane, the preview area appears blank or displays a message stating that the file cannot be previewed, although images and text files preview normally. I have tried repairing and resetting File Explorer settings, but the issue persists.

Make sure you have a PDF reader installed that supports previewing in File Explorer, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Microsoft Edge.

  • This usually comes down to the PDF preview handler rather than File Explorer itself.

A few things to try: set Microsoft Edge or Adobe Acrobat as the default PDF app, then restart File Explorer. In File Explorer Options, make sure “Show preview handlers in preview pane” is enabled. If you use Adobe, try Help > Repair Installation. If you use Edge, repair Edge from Windows Settings > Apps.

Also test with a local PDF on the desktop. If local PDFs preview but OneDrive/network PDFs don’t, the file may not be fully available offline or the preview handler may be timing out on the network path.
