My audio doesn't work, no matter how much I try to fix it

My audio doesn't work- I've tried everything I can, running the troubleshooter, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, disallowing apps to take full control of the speakers, everything. (It's not on mute, I swear.) Running a device scan/antivirus doesn't make a difference, they never find anything wrong. Sometimes I'll get the sound to work, but only until the laptop goes to sleep, and then it's back to silence. Occasionally the sound works right after I reboot the laptop, but only for a few seconds. I'm convinced that some application I have is still taking control, since whenever I try to run a "test sound", I get the "This device is being used by another application" error message, even though the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" is turned off. What do I do, and is there any way to find what application is taking control?

My laptop is on Windows 11, OS build number is 26100.2894, and the laptop itself is a ASUS Zenbook 14, if that helps at all.1

Your suspicion about an app controlling the device is valid. Using Process Explorer to identify which process is holding control is a good next step. Additionally, disabling exclusive mode and monitoring background processes can help isolate the problem.

Click on Troubleshooting in System Sound in Settings, or you can roll back the sound card driver in Device Manager.
