Is this true?

Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Sign up to test upcoming features and updates early, including improvements to update processes.

  • Yes—the announcement is real, but availability depends on the Windows channel and rollout stage, so not every stable PC will have every control immediately.

Microsoft has announced clearer Restart/Shut down choices that do not automatically install a pending update, repeatable pause periods of up to 35 days, and coordination of Windows, .NET, driver, and firmware updates toward one monthly restart. The changes began in Insider channels and are rolling out progressively, so seeing an article does not guarantee they are already on a particular retail build.

Microsoft’s own explanation is here: https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2026/04/24/your-windows-update-experience-just-got-updated/

I’d still install security updates reasonably promptly; the improvement is more control over timing and fewer surprise restarts, not a recommendation to leave a PC unpatched indefinitely.
