I have had this recently with a failed Windows KB. The update gets stuck mid process causing the device to boot to Automatic repair. After loads of testing we have found a work around using the following process.
On Recover screen go into Advanced Options
Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt
Type c:
Run DiskPart
Run List disk
Run Select disk 0
Run list partition
Run select partion 1 (system)
Run assign letter=V
Exit Diskpart
Run bcdboot c:\windows /s V: /f UEFI
Restart Laptop
