KB5046617 - Failed to Install repeatedly
I'm still facing problems trying to install the KB5046617 update on my Windows 11 machine. The installation repeatedly fails with the error code 0x800f0831 (CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION), which, from what I understand, points to corruption within the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) store.
This is what I've tried so far:
- Running D*ISM Command: I executed the D*ISM clean-up image command to repair the image using a Windows ISO as the source: However, this resulted in another error: 0x800f081f, indicating that the source files couldn't be found:
- In-Place Repair: I attempted an in-place repair of Windows 11 using the latest ISO, selecting the option to keep my personal files and apps. This did not resolve the update issue.
- Resetting Windows Update Components: I followed the steps to reset the Windows Update components, including renaming the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders and restarting the necessary services. Despite this, the update still fails to install.
- Using Windows Update Troubleshooter: I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which identified some issues but wasn't able to fix the CBS store corruption.
Despite these efforts, the KB5046617 update remains stuck in a failed state. I'm unsure of the next steps to take at this point, other than perhaps a reset.
* Weirdly, this forum won't let me cite Windows command made up of the letters D, I, S and M! 🤷♂️
Exactly the same problems on my pc. Meanwhile I've also tried a newer cummulative update for Win 11 2024-H2 (KB5046617). But it behaves exactly the same. After restart the update is stuck at 40% progress and then it fails and reboots with a full roll-back. As Win 11 does not support to put bad updates on an ignore-list, bad updates goe boot-loop.
