Is it just my imagination that the small taskbar icon looks unfamiliar?
I know that you can turn off the small taskbar icons, which can be quite useful at times, but I always feel that the display looks a little strange and not quite right. I wonder if I'm the only one who feels this way?

Not your imagination. Many find small taskbar icons visually off-putting due to:
Broken expectations (default size is deeply familiar)
Tighter visual clutter
Unbalanced proportions (vs. Start button/tray)
Reduced click precision
You’re not alone — it’s a common preference to keep them at standard size.
