Is CleanMyMac a safe program as a mac cleaner?
Hi everyone,
My Mac is running low on storage lately, so I’ve been looking into tools to clean up junk files and free up space. I came across Clean My Mac, and it seems pretty popular, but I’ve also seen mixed opinions online, which makes me a bit unsure.
So I wanted to ask—has anyone here used Clean My Mac? Is CleanMyMac a safe program and worth using to free up space, or should I stick with built-in macOS tools? Any advice or personal experience would really help.
Thanks!

CleanMyMac is not a safe program? Security researchers have uncovered a sophisticated malware campaign that uses a fake website to impersonate CleanMyMac. This fake site, hosted at a domain like cleanmymacos[.]org, is designed to trick you into infecting your own Mac.

It is particularly useful for users who want to keep their Mac secure while freeing up disk space, as it works entirely within Apple’s trusted system environment.
It lets you visualize disk usage without paying for premium software, though it only scans and displays files, with no built-in cleanup features.
First, visit the official website, download the software, and install it on your Mac.
Launch the app, select the disk you want to scan, and wait for the scan to complete.
The app will display all files as colored squares; the larger the square, the larger the file.
You can then identify large, unused files and folders and delete or move them to free up space.
This method lets you analyze disk usage without relying on paid tools, so you can decide for yourself whether Is CleanMyMac really worth it for your needs.
If you just need to find and delete large files, this is a great option, but it lacks CleanMyMac’s one-click cleanup feature and additional features.
This tool is particularly useful for users who want an intuitive overview of their disk usage and don’t mind managing files manually.

If you’ve decided that CleanMyMac is not a safe program for your Mac—whether because of the recent fake website malware campaigns or simply because you don’t trust closed-source, paid cleaners—then manually cleaning your Mac’s hidden junk is not only completely free, but also the most transparent and risk-free approach.
1. Open Finder and click Go in the top menu bar.
2. Select "Go to Folder..." and paste ~/Library/Caches. Delete the contents of the folders here (but not the folders themselves) .
3. Do the same for ~/Library/Logs. These are safe to delete .
4. Check ~/Library/Application Support for folders belonging to apps you have already uninstalled and delete those specific folders .
While you’re manually cleaning, don’t forget these obvious but often overlooked spots:
- Downloads folder – Delete old ,dmg installer files and anything you no longer need.
- Trash – Right‑click the Trash icon and choose Empty Trash.
- Desktop – Move large files you don’t access daily into a separate folder in Documents.
- Large & old files – Use Finder’s search: set search criteria to “Size is greater than 100 MB” and “Last opened date is before last month.”
Manually cleaning hidden junk is the safest possible method if you feel that CleanMyMac is not a safe program for your needs. It requires no downloads, no money, and no trust in a third‑party developer. You only need a few minutes and the willingness to follow a simple path.

If you're worried that CleanMyMac is not a safe program for your Mac, you're right to be cautious—and turning to BleachBit as a free alternative is a smart move. Think of BleachBit as a powerful, no‑nonsense digital broom. It's a free, open‑source system cleaner that finds and removes all kinds of unnecessary files that pile up over time: temporary files, browser caches, cookies, logs, and even old system junk that just takes up space. Its main job is to free up disk space and protect your privacy by wiping away traces of your activity.
If you're comfortable with command‑line tools and don't mind some trial and error, you might get it running. But for most Mac users looking for a simple, safe, out‑of‑the‑box solution, this is a real downside.
💡 Why use BleachBit if CleanMyMac is not a safe program
It's truly free – No hidden costs, no trial periods, no "pro" version. Everything is available to everyone.
Open source – Anyone can inspect its code, so you don't have to wonder if it's hiding something sketchy. The tech community keeps it honest.
Good for privacy – It can securely delete files so they can't be recovered by data recovery tools, and it clears browser history, cookies, and caches.
Lightweight – Unlike some cleaners that hog your system while scanning, BleachBit stays in the background and doesn't slow you down.
Wide application support – It knows how to clean junk from dozens of programs—browsers, office suites, media players, and more.
