Insufficient permissions to delete files in Windows 11

The new HP laptop cannot delete files (even when granted full permissions), and the initial “Backup from Old Computer” migration failed to transfer data successfully to the new device.

  • Often, even with full permissions, Windows may block access if you don’t own the files.

    Steps:

    1. Right-click the file or folder, then select Properties.
    2. Switch to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    3. At the top, you'll see the Owner. Click Change.
    4. Enter your user account name (or "Administrators" group), then click Check Names.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Back in the Advanced Security Settings window, check Replace owner on subcontainers and objects (if applicable).
    7. Click Apply and OK.
