How to take screenshot while in gaming on my windows 11 pc
I'm pretty new to PC gaming and could use some help with something that seems basic but I can't quite figure out. I want to capture screenshots of cool moments while I'm actually playing a game on my Windows 11 PC, without having to alt-tab out or pause and mess up my gameplay.
I've tried the regular Print Screen button before but it either does nothing or just seems to copy something to clipboard with no idea where it goes.
Does anyone know the correct steps to take screenshot while in game pc on Windows 11? Also curious if there's a way to see where the screenshots get saved afterward, or if there are better third-party tools people recommend for this.
Thanks for any help!

Use Win + Alt + Print Screen to take a screenshot without leaving the game.
- Press the shortcut while playing. Some laptops also require Fn.
- Find the saved image in Videos > Captures.
- If the shortcut does not work, press Win + G, open Capture, and click the camera button.
For Steam games, press F12 instead. Find your screenshots under Steam > View > Recordings & Screenshots.
If regular Print Screen only copies to the clipboard, open Paint, press Ctrl + V, and save the image.

To take a screenshot while in game on Windows 11 is possible. AutoHotkey is an open-source scripting language for Windows. You can write a script that takes a screenshot when a specific key is pressed.
The concept: An AHK script can simulate key presses or use the Windows API to capture a screenshot, often with more granular control than built-in tools .
A basic AHK script example:
text
SendMode Input
^!s::
Send {PrintScreen}
MsgBox, Screenshot taken!
ReturnThis script triggers a screenshot when you press Ctrl+Alt+S. While it might not bypass all protections, it can be a lightweight and discreet method. The open-source utility WinShot is a compiled AHK script that uses the Windows key for this very purpose, though you can create your own to fit your exact needs.
You can absolutely use AutoHotkey to take screenshot while in game on Windows 11. Since AutoHotkey lets you create custom keyboard shortcuts and powerful automation scripts, it's an ideal solution if you want full control over your screenshot workflow.

GameHQ is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) tool designed specifically for capturing gameplay on Windows 11 without using the Game Bar or third-party screen recorders. It focuses on a "controller-first" experience, but you can also control it entirely with your mouse and keyboard, making it a solid option if you want to learn how to take screenshot while in game pc using a different method.
Here’s how it works:
- How to take screenshot while in game pc: You can take a screenshot instantly by either tapping the Share button on a supported controller or by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S. The tool saves captures as PNG or JPEG files without injecting into the game process.
- Saving replays: Holding the Share button or using the Ctrl+Shift+E shortcut saves the previous few minutes of gameplay as a video clip from its rolling buffer.
- In-game overlay: You can press the Guide button (or Ctrl+Shift+G) to bring up a controller-friendly overlay to browse your screenshots and clips without tabbing out.
Compared to simpler tools, GameHQ requires setting up the application and ensuring you have a compatible GPU for video capture. However, once installed, it provides a very private and portable way to manage all your game captures in one library. So if you want to take screenshot while in game pc without third-party bloat, GameHQ is a promising and complex free option.

For users who want to take screenshots while gaming on their computers, Flameshot is a screenshot tool that offers region selection, annotation, and saving features. You can download the Windows installer from the official website or the GitHub release page. The tool works well with games in windowed and borderless windowed modes, but games in exclusive full-screen mode may not always respond correctly to third-party screenshot shortcuts.
How to Take Screenshots While Playing Games on a PC
Step 1: Open the official download page and select the Windows version. Download the installer, run it, and complete the installation.
Official download page
Step 2: Launch the application before starting your game. It normally remains available from the Windows system tray, allowing you to start a capture without keeping its main window open.
Step 3: Open Configuration from the tray icon and review the available settings. Choose the save directory and other capture preferences you want to use before starting the game.
Step 4: Set up a convenient keyboard shortcut for the Launch Flameshot action in Windows. A dedicated shortcut is useful because the Print Screen key may already be assigned to another Windows screenshot feature or to the game itself.
Step 5: Start your game. When you reach the scene you want to capture, press the configured shortcut. The capture interface should appear over the screen.
Step 6: Drag the selection box around the part of the game you want to capture. You can use the toolbar to add arrows, rectangles, text, or other annotations when needed.
Step 7: Click the Save button or use Ctrl + S to save the screenshot. Select a destination folder and filename if prompted, then return to the game.
Step 8: For users who prefer a command, the graphical capture interface can also be started from Command Prompt with:
flameshot gui
A full-screen image can be saved directly to a specified file with:
flameshot full -p "C:\Users\Public\Pictures\game-screenshot.png"
The command-line method is useful for scripted captures, but a keyboard shortcut is usually much more practical during gameplay. For exclusive fullscreen games that block or minimize when another capture interface appears, switching the game to borderless-windowed mode can provide more reliable results.

To take screenshots directly within games on a Windows 11 computer, one method is to use Python in conjunction with open-source libraries such as PIL and PyAutoGUI. These libraries allow you to programmatically capture screenshots and save them as image files. This method is lightweight, supports scripting, and can be triggered manually or automatically via keyboard shortcuts.
To get started, install Python on your system, then open Command Prompt and run:
pip install pyautogui pillow
Once installed, you can create a simple Python script to capture the entire screen and save it to your desired folder. A basic script would look like this:
python
import pyautogui
import time
time.sleep(2) # optional delay
screenshot = pyautogui.screenshot()
screenshot.save("screenshot.png")
You can assign this script to a hotkey or run it from the terminal whenever you need a quick capture while gaming. For more control, you can also capture specific regions or add timestamps to filenames.
If you're still figuring out how to take screenshots while gaming on a Windows 11 computer, this Python-based method is both simple and gives you complete control. It doesn't rely on third-party overlays or tools that consume a lot of system resources. However, some games may block certain screenshot methods—if you encounter this issue, you may need to run the script with administrator privileges or adjust the game's display settings.
Pros:
- Lightweight and fully scriptable—no background bloat.
- Can be triggered manually or automated with keybinds.
Cons:
- May not work with games that block overlays or require admin privileges.
- Limited image editing features compared to dedicated screenshot tools.
- Requires basic Python setup—not a one-click solution.
