How to setup backup periodically for Windows 11
Setting up backup periodically on Windows 11 is a piece of cake. I've done it myself, and I'll walk you through the steps. We'll use the built-in tool, Windows Backup, and some clever shortcuts to schedule it.
Step 1: Open Backup Settings
Go to Start > Settings > System > Backup. Alternatively, you can search for "backup" in the search bar.
Step 2: Choose Your File Backup Settings
Here, you'll set up what gets backed up. For this example, let's choose the default settings:
- Under "Back up my files", toggle it on.
- Select the files and folders you want to backup by clicking on the "Add a folder" button and navigating to the desired folders.
Step 3: Choose Your External Drive
You can either use a connected external drive or a network share. Here, I'll choose a connected drive for simplicity. Under "Back up to an external drive", click on "Add a drive". Choose your external drive, and click "Select drive".
Step 4: Schedule Your Backup
Now, the fun part! Click on the "Set up a backup schedule" button. You can backup your files:
- Every hour
- Daily
- Weekly
- For this example, I'll choose weekly.
Step 5: Confirm Your Settings
Double-check that everything is correct:
- Your chosen files and folders
- Your external drive
- The frequency of your backup
Microsoft’s backup feature is clumsy. I would recommend third party software such as either Macrium Reflect or what I have been using for years which is Acronis. I am extremely satisfied with Acronis and their support is top notch and extremely responsive.
