How to Fix This PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11 24H2

I have two computers. The issue happens on the two PCs when I was trying to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2. One laptop is fully supported and running Windows 11 23H2. The other is unsupported PC (because of old CPU) with Windows 11 24H2.

When I am using the Windows 11 Update app to install Windows 11 24H2, it says:

Why am I seeing this?

This PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11 24H2.

Your PC isn't supported yet on this version of Windows. Windows Update will automatically offer you this version of Windows once the issue has been resolved.

Is there any way to fix This PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11? It seems a common issue across the online boards.

  • "This PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11" get this errorIf your PC just can’t handle it, there’s nothing wrong with sticking with Windows 10 for now. It’s still getting support until October 2025, so you’re not missing out on too much. Plus, many features in Windows 11 could be available in future updates for Windows 10, too. If it’s looking like your current setup just can’t meet the requirements and hardware upgrades aren't feasible, you might want to start thinking about a new PC. It’s definitely a more drastic measure, but sometimes it’s the right choice depending on how old your machine is.

If you find out your CPU or RAM needs an upgrade, it might be worth the investment! For me, a little RAM boost once worked wonders for system performance, and I ended up having a solid setup for a couple more years. Sometimes your motherboard needs to be updated to support Windows 11 features. Check your manufacturer’s website for BIOS/UEFI updates. Maybe you can avoid the "This PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11" problem.  I had to do this once, and it helped unlock some new capabilities on my machine.

  • If you’re getting that annoying message saying this PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11, it’s definitely a moment for a bit of caution. I’ve been there, and it can be frustrating when you’re ready for that fresh Windows experience but your machine is just not having it!  make sure you know what the official system requirements are for Windows 11. Microsoft has a list that includes things like TPM version 2.0, secure boot capability, and certain CPU specs. If your hardware is missing any of these, that’s a big reason for the upgrade failure.

Older drivers can be a real pain when it comes to compatibility with new OS versions. If you're running outdated drivers, consider updating them while you're on Windows 10, so, the next time you upgrade you won't have a problem like "This PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11."

Sometimes, your motherboard needs a little love to support the new OS. Check the manufacturer's website for your motherboard/laptop. An updated BIOS/UEFI might just hold the key to unlocking that Windows 11 upgrade!  If it turns out your PC isn’t compatible, consider whether you really need Windows 11. There’s nothing wrong with sticking with Windows 10, especially since it’ll still get updates for a while longer, or even consider lightweight Linux distributions for a fresher startup experience.

  • If your PC is prebuilt (e.g., a laptop or desktop from brands like Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, etc.), the manufacturer may have specific tools, settings, or firmware updates to help you enable TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, or other features required for Windows 11.

You can also contact the manufacturer's customer support for assistance. They may provide specific instructions or confirm if your PC is not upgradeable to Windows 11.

By the way, if this PC can't be upgraded to this version of Windows 11 24H2, just stick to the current Windows 11 version as it is more safe and less risky.

Benefits of Sticking with Old Windows 11 Version

Stability: If your PC is older or doesn't meet the requirements for Windows 11, staying on Windows 10 ensures a stable and reliable experience.

Compatibility: Some older hardware or software may not work properly on Windows 11. Staying on Windows 10 avoids these compatibility issues.

No Need for Upgrades:You won't need to worry about upgrading your hardware or dealing with potential upgrade failures.

    Verify TPM and Secure Boot

    1. Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
