How does my laptop get hot while sitting completely still?
My laptop gets noticeably hot even when I'm not using it at all and it's just sitting completely still on my desk. I haven't opened any programs or done anything demanding, yet it still warms up on its own, and I can't figure out why this is happening.

Sort by CPU, Memory, or GPU usage to identify any processes consuming excessive resources.
A laptop can still be working even when you are not touching it. Windows updates, antivirus scans, cloud syncing and search indexing can run in the background without any obvious window open. Charging the battery also adds heat.
Here is how to check what is happening:
- While the laptop is warm, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Processes, then click CPU to sort by usage. Watch for a minute or two to see whether an app or background task stays near the top. Check the Disk and GPU columns too.
- If Windows Update or an antivirus scan is active, let it finish and check whether the laptop cools down afterward. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes.
- Keep the laptop on a hard, flat surface and make sure its intake and exhaust vents are clear. Dust buildup can restrict airflow even when the fan is running.
- If it is plugged in and the battery is charging, compare the warmth after charging finishes. You can also select Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Balanced, if available, to reduce unnecessary power use.
- If this happens while it should be asleep, select Start > Power > Sleep and check whether it settles down. Some laptops can briefly perform background activity during Modern Standby. If it stays hot, use Hibernate, if available, while investigating the sleep issue.
Some warmth is normal. Persistent heat with low CPU/GPU activity, constant loud fans, severe slowdowns or unexpected shutdowns deserves a cooling-system check using the laptop manufacturer’s diagnostics.
