How do I split pdf pages into separate files on Windows 11?

Got a massive PDF from work that's over 1000 pages long and needs to be split into separate files by section. The document is a compiled report and each section needs to be distributed to different teams, so keeping them as one giant file just isn't practical anymore.

Online tools have been a dead end so far — most of them cap out at a certain file size or number of pages, and the ones that do accept it either take forever to process, fail halfway through, or noticeably degrade the quality of the output. Also not too comfortable uploading a work document to a random website.

What is the best way to split pdf pages into separate files on Windows 11? Wondering if there's a better approach than online free tool for something this big.

You can use Microsoft Edge to split PDF pages into separate files. The process uses a clever trick: instead of actually printing anything, you use Edge's "Print" function with the "Microsoft Print to PDF" option to save specific pages as a brand new PDF file. This method is completely free, requires no additional software, and works on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Here is the step-by-step process to split PDF pages into separate files using Microsoft Edge:

Step 1: Open your PDF in Microsoft Edge

Find your PDF file in File Explorer

       Right-click on the file

Choose Open with > Microsoft Edge

Step 2: Access the Print menu

Once the PDF is open, click the printer icon in the top toolbar

Alternatively, press Ctrl + P on your keyboard

Step 3: Select "Microsoft Print to PDF"

In the Print window that appears, click the "Printer" dropdown menu

Select "Microsoft Print to PDF" from the list

Step 4: Choose which pages to extract

In the "Pages" field, type the page numbers you want in your new PDF file

To extract a single page: type 7

To extract a range: type 3-6

To extract multiple specific pages: type 2,4,6

Step 5: Save your new PDF

Click the Print button at the bottom of the window

A "Save Print Output As" window will appear

Choose your destination folder, name your file, and click Save

That is it. You have now created a new PDF file containing only the pages you selected from your original document.
