You can do this without any paid third-party software — Windows 11 already has what you need.
Easiest built-in method (recommended)
Use Xbox Game Bar.
- Press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar
- Open the Capture panel
- Click Settings (gear icon) → enable Record audio
- Make sure:
- System sounds is ON (for app/system audio)
- Microphone is ON if you need voice
- Press Win + Alt + R to start/stop recording
The video will be saved automatically in:
Videos → Captures
Important notes
- Xbox Game Bar records app and system audio, not the desktop itself
- It works best for apps, browsers, and presentations
- Make sure the correct input device is selected in Windows sound settings
If audio still isn’t recorded
- Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer
- Confirm the app you’re recording isn’t muted
- Check Privacy & security → Microphone and allow access
If you need to record the entire desktop (not just apps), there are free tools available — but for standard screen recordings, the built-in tool should cover your needs.
